I wanted a simple memory bump to 32GB for the $199 model. That wasn't even innovative. But that simple thing would have provided enough of an advance to make me jump.

I think memory bumps will come with the 5S or whatever is next year. If they go the 's' route they got to give us more than internal spec bumps (which are actually getting more and more useless as 90% of apps don't utilise faster cpus etc).

I've been reading many articles and comments about the new iPhone 5, and while they are fairly mixed opinions, I still don't get what people really want from their phones now-a-days....

People are arguing Apple is not innovating anymore, well, are their competitors really innovating themselves??

Forget what Apple is doing, forget what Nokia is doing, forget what Samsung can do, and lets ask the real question: what more can be really innovative at this point? seriously?

I agree. People want to be wowed rather than impressed. The refinement of so many features of the iphone is indeed impressive but the increments may be smaller than most peoples perceptions. I have a feeling that once people have these phones in there hand, and developers take advantage of the A6 speeds, they will be finally wowed.

I agree. Most of the complaints I have about the iPhone are more features I would like to see in iOS (software) moreso the changes in the hardware. Bigger screen and LTE were my two biggest hardware changes which are in the 5. Outside of possibly NFC, I'm don't have a huge hardware wish-list and I'm not sure what more can be added hardware wise other then normal spec bumps.

iOS6 though I wish had incorporated more stuff in it. There are places there they could improve on.

When you say you are dissapointed in the ipHone 5, is it the hardware or the software?

I wanted more software improvements but hardware-wise...

Better camera - 25% thinner existing camera? Who cares!? Give me a better camera. Optical Image Stabilization like with Nokia Lumia 920, etc... innovate.
Small LED notification light.
No Home button - Replace with Zephyr, try something new.
Wi-Fi Direct - Direct connection with printers and other Wi-Fi devices.
USB 3.0 - You're making a new port, make it USB 3.0.
And honestly, I'd just keep the screen size the same, 3.5". This long iPhone looks just strange.
Also how about trying some new materials like polycarbonate? Lumia 800 looks great and does not require a case to protect it.

Well, if you go back to 2007 and asked that question before Jobs went on stage and introduced the original iphone, you would have looked like a real goose!

Your confusing innovation with evolution of a product. The 5 is a great example of evolution due to technical refinements.

Best thing for innovation right now would be for everyone to stop patenting the crap out of he smartphone market, its killing all innovation, and sadly Apple is a spearheading this!

I want Tim to go up on stage and awe me, cause that is what Jobs did, when Jobs showed me the iphone 4 it was WOW!!!!! Thank you! Iphone 5... meh incremental update of the 5, I was bored to be honest. My biggest concern is the next phone in 2013 will be the iphone 5S.... innovation?? Hardly... !

A good example is Google Wallet..... I have it on my Nexus 7 but NOBODY I shop at takes it, so what good is it....

I saw some lame opinion piece from CNet today about Apple not innovating and wondered the same thing. What annoyed me more than anything was the "Android phones have had this and that already." Yes, when there are about 100 different phones running the Android OS, they are likely to beat Apple with a lot of features simply based on all the launches between Apple's launches.

Bingo.

I've come to conclude when people can't afford the newest iphone, or arent able to get it without paying outright, they tend to bash the phone itself. You knew for a fact when you GOT the iPhone 4s there would be a 5 coming after it. But you got it. WHY complain about the new iphone with 200 NEW features about it alone

What I expect:
- Making a call from time to time
- Nice design and sturdy build (the first is just a nice extra)
- Being small enough so there is no need for extra case or pocket
- A camera for the few occasions when I don't carry a real camera
- Web browsing on the go, no need to be super comfortable
- Reading my emails
- Listening to music
- Listening to audiobooks
- Turn by Turn navigation
- A little gaming if I really have no other device available (no need for the ultimate in graphics)

So I expect it to be an all-round that makes carrying other devices obsolete. No need for exceeding in any of the areas, but iPhone (5) actually does, especially in the category music with iTunes Match.

Maybe a better camera, that's always excellent, and yes the long iPhone looks strange but it's like when the iPhone 4 came out, we just need to get used to it.

But no home button? Common that has gotta stay.

what i wanted is 24 hours of battery life, and it can project a screen to a wall so i can watch movies in big size.

It is very, very hard to restrain myself and not make direct personal comments about your intelligence, but I'll behave and keep it civil.

To say that we've reached a limit in innovation shows such an amazing degree of ignorance it's impossible to understand. At the start of the 1900's some very close-minded people thought we were reaching an end of innovation, we were getting the point where everything had been invented. Before the airplane, space shuttle, satellite communications, gps, microwaves, television, atomic power, lasers, or electronics were even ideas. We look back and laugh at those people for their incredible ignorance.

You can proudly join the ranks of those close-minded idiots.

EXCELLENT BATTERY LIFE

I am content with the current features. Now make it so that usage will get me 12+ hours.

This.

Battery on my 4s is a bit.... meh. It will get me through the day, maybe 2 if i don't use it much, but I'd prefer double that. I want to be able to go out on a friday night, spend the weekend doing stuff, and not be tethered to a power outlet.

Keep the current processing power. Just focus on getting those things consuming less battery. Software can evolve somewhat for new features without needing higher power consumption.

Or at least provide a "power saver" mode to clock down/use lesser networks to get better battery.

More battery life would be nice. Especially when they are making it thinner. They could still make it thinner but by not as much and then get 10% or 20% more battery in there. And still advertise it as "thinner".

Optical Image Stabilization is not an innovative feature. It has been around before. People need to stop throwing this term around. In this case this feature is a refinement on the finished product. Capturing 3D images that people can move around in on the phone would be innovative. Just as an example.

On a side note, there is some interesting information you should read up on around the Lumia's demonstration of their Optical Image Stabilization and their failure to remove reflective surfaces while filming.

This is easy. Screw looks, give me function over form. The iPhone is beautiful, but I want more features!

- Stereo speakers (or at the very least a better, louder speaker)
- Stronger vibration motor (perhaps with an option to control the strength in Settings)
- A kickstand so I don't need some stupid third party accessory
- Expandable storage and/or an easy way to put files on and take files off
- A bigger battery (I'll take a thicker phone with longer battery life any day)
- Micro HDMI output (Airplay is great, but what do I do if I want to share to non-Apple stuff... say at work)
- If there is room left over, improve the cameras even more
- And now, a third antenna so I can have LTE data and CDMA voice at the same time on Verizon!

I don't care if this is copying, these are useful features! If only I could design my own phone...

EDIT: Oh, and maybe NFC? Who knows...

The iPhone isn't for you, and I'm sure you can find an Android device to have most of these features. Oh and the phone you described would look ugly as sin. ;)

Hahaha, it wouldn't have to be ugly! Make it the same thickness as the iPhone 4S to fit a bigger battery, even nicer camera, and maybe NFC. Then put another speaker grille on the top of the phone, and a port on each side for the micro HDMI and expandable storage. Ports != ugly ... is the Macbook line ugly?

I'm sure an Android phone would have all those features, but I love iOS and the Apple ecosystem.

I'm as big an Apple fanboi as the next guy (just look at my signature), but I'm also not blind to Apple's weaknesses. I just wish Apple would care a little more about usability (from a hardware perspective).
