On the iPad try going into Settings --> Messages and sign out of your Apple ID...then sign back in. After I did that my phone number appeared and I was apple to choose to be reached at my phone number AND start new conversations from my phone number. WIll be tyring out in a few minutes and will report back.

Edit
Well that didn't last long...the same thing happened to me as someone else in the thread. Number showed up for a few minutes then disappeared and can't get it back.

I'm in the same boat, this feature isn't working for me at all no matter what I try.

Does anyone know if the iPad has to be on iOS6 to use this feature? I have an iPad 1 so its going to suck massively if both the iphone and ipad have to be on ios6 for this to work.

I got it to work!

Just activate iMessage on iPad and AFTERWARDS activate iMessage on iPhone.
A pop-up will come up on iPad saying the number was added and if you like to use it on your iPad as well. :)

Thanks! Just deactivated iMessage on both units and then activated on my iPhone and then iPad and now it works great with my phone number on both units.

Still nothing for me. iPhone 4S and iPad 3 both running iOS 6. I'm guessing Apple is still fidgeting with the servers and that's why it's intermittent for some people. Hopefully in a few days (weeks?) it will smooth out and start working correctly.

EDIT: Got it working (we'll see if it lasts). Not sure if the method matters since I've heard of people getting it to work all different ways, but for what it's worth, I was signed in on my iPad and deactivated/reactivated iMessage on my iPhone. The "waiting for activation" message remained for a good 2-3 minutes, then suddenly it became a "receive from" option on my iPad. After selecting my phone number on my iPad I was able to remove all email addresses and use solely phone number.

Yup. It's iOS 6 on each device only. My iPad 2 was on iOS 5 whilst iPhone was on 6 and no joy. My friend had his iPad on iOS 6 and iPhone on iOS 5 and also no joy.

I got both working on iOS 6 now. You have to sign out your apple ID on both devices, turn them off then on, then sign in on iPad first then iPhone and you get the popups mentioned. :)

I'm confused, whats is this feature suppose to do? What difference does it make if you choose your email or phone number?

On iOS 5, if you iMessage someone's number, the iMessage only goes to the iPhone. If you iMessage email, I goes iPhone, iPad or mountain lion. With iMessage in iOS 6, I messaging the mobile will also do all 3 devices.

Most people have people's mobile number more than their email address.

Ahh, so thats what they mean by unified appleid? That makes things simpler than. It should always go to all your devices, and you shouldn't have to worry about sending an iMessage to a mobile number or email.

Yea, think apple got the message that it didn't totally work as promised as it would only do so via email addresses, so they sorted it.

i've the same problem.
i have an iphone ios6 and OSX M-LionDP4.
if someone can help me please. :)

neither trying to resetting messages in mac?

Nope, people have said that mountain lion does not have the unifying apple ID and number feature in DP4, so no amount of resetting will work. You gotta wait for the next DP or official release. For now it's iPhone, iPod touch, iPad only
