@deptraisteve ?

I followed the steps you laid out using the WinSCP to break into the iPhone to change text tones but was denied access. I'm guess this is because of the new firmware and would like to know if there is a way around it?

@Blinded

Thanks for the help on that one but it seems like the firmware update might have blocked that path for me anyways since the WinSCP isn't wanting to connect now.

Hi

Hey I have been able to change the sms text received tone in the iphone but when I use the WinSCP program, how do i change the tone for when i plug my phone into my computer or wen i plug it into my charger. I hope you guyz know which tone i'm talking bout its the pretty high pitched one when you plug it in and it goes to the battery screen. I just wanna know where to locate that caf file in the system of the iphone in WinSCP so i can swap it with my own caf sound. Please let me know thanx!

That you do in libary/themes/uisounds there you will find some files replace them.

hy

pleaase help me..I accidently erase UISounds from Iphone Explorer and now when i recieve messages it doesn't vibrate or rings anymore. What can I do?

Well..I erased it from Iphone Explorer...and now i did a backup in Itunes and I have only one ringtone..the problem is how i can sync what i put in Iphone Explorer with the Iphone?

Works GREAT thanks !

ps there has got to be a way to manipulate the amount of sms ringtones one can have...:apple:

Ok, heres what you do, sftp into your phone go to-
System

Library

Audio

UIsounds

now scroll down to where you see sms-received1.caf thru sms-received6.caf these are your stock sms tones! And to answer your question you will rename YOUR sms tones to sms-received1.caf and so on, for example:

"Godfather.mp3", you will need to convert this with an audio converter such as "Switch Audio Converter",to "Godfather.aiff", then after that, you rename it "sms-received1.caf", then you replace the original one with this one by dragging it over to the original one and copying it, a window will pop-up saying "do you want to replace this file", just click yes!!! But when you look in your phone, by going to Settings - Sounds - New Text Message, you will still see your stock sms tone names ie: Tri-tone, Chime, etc., so just listen to them 1 by 1 to see which is which !! You can also do this to any file that has a .caf extension like new-mail.caf,sent-mail.caf and even the dialing numbers of the dialer. Sorry if this not quite "direct-to-the-point" but i'm really better at showing then explaining... Anyway, just post-up again if you have anymore questions. Good luck mate..
:)

Does your phone have to be jailbroken before you can do this, anyone?....and if it isnt jailbroken is there anyway to customize the SMS tones, or email notification?

I'd go back and re-read the first page of this thread. :)

So I followed all the steps and it works for me. My only problem is once I receive a text and I go to unlock and view text, the sound doesnt stop. It wont even stop when I hit the lock button again. Did I place it in the wrong folder?? Does anyone else have this problem?

SMS or Message tones play all the way to the end once they start. No way to stop them.

Adding new message tones to iPhone

Hi there,:)

I know this is an old thread, but I just had a question for dsgalit, or anyone else who can help me. I have recently got an iPhone and have managed to convert some of my songs to ringtones via iTunes (manually, by converting the file types) but I was just wondering how I would go about doing the same for message tones. I read through most of the the posts on this thread, but couldn't quite understand the whole thing. I'm not sure whether to change file names via my phone or itunes...?? I couldn't find System->Library->etc on either my phone, mac or iTunes. Could someone please help me!? Also, dsgalit, where would I find a cool 'you've got mail' tone to add (once I work out how!)?

Thanks a lot!

Is your device jailbroken? If not, you can't change message tones. :)

hi guys,

I did everything that was told...

when I replace the ringtone into the Iphone using Iphone Browser, it does not play on my iphone, but it can be preview on Iphone Browser...What could be wrong ? I backup the original tone and knowing that the custom ringtone that i created doesnt work, I restore the original ones back, and the original ones work...

And may I know if I can change the "name" of the default ringtone when I have replaced it with custom ones ? Lets say I want to rename "Electronic"

If they don't play then they are likely not converted correctly.

but I can use media player to play on my cpu...

is there any size limitation on sms tone ? no right ? caus I find that my custom sms tone is easily 10times larger than their original one. around 1677kb.

Error in Trying

Hi all. I reviewed this thread and have what I believe is a fairly unique problem. I recently jailbroke my phone and was able to change the incoming email alert tone and some others without a problem using the method you all seem to describe. Converted the files to AIFF then renamed them as the original system files with .caf extensions and SSH'd them into the phone.

But when I tried to do the same thing for the SMS tones, I got the Homer Simpson "Doh!" sound for all six of the SMS tones (the one I was trying to change to was not Homer Simpson -- I have no idea where that came from). I replaced the original files and I'm STILL getting the Doh! message for every SMS tone. It's as if the OS is using a default error tone for all the SMS alerts now, even after they've been restored.

Any help? I'm new to this so please be detailed in responses. Thanks. <=)

Customising text message tones

Hi,
Can anyone help me? I've recently purchased an iphone 3GS and have worked out how to get my own ringtones by using Garageband, but now would like to get my own ringtones. I've been reading up on how to do it, but can't get into my iphone through my mac (apart from through itunes).

The finder shows an 'extra' hard disk called iDisk in the device column, but when I click on it I get a window asking for a user name and password. I've tried and tried to get past this but can't - I've even registered a user name and password but still can't get past this window.

Can anyone help me before I tear all my hair out?

Many thanks!

Scuba Suzie
