I just connected my MBP to my monitor, and all it is showing is my screen saver. How do I actually use the monitor and set it up?

go to system preferences > displays

sort it out from there by assigning the function desired to the external display, i.e. mirrored or extended desktop as the primary or secondary display.

thanks! also.. is there any way to use the monitor without having to charge my macbook? I don't want to kill my battery.

The monitor is going to draw a lot of power from your MBP. You are going to kill your battery a whole lot faster if you keep cycling it rather than keeping it plugged in. FYI Your computer is not constantly charging your battery while its plugged in.

Keep it plugged in but every 2 or 3 days make sure you run the MacBook on battery as well to get the electrons moving.
