so, my father in law got a new printer at my mother in laws request....its a canon mx870.... the problem with the setup is this.... the printer cannot be wireless and wired at the same time.... is there a way to use the desktop computer that is connected to the wireless router as wireless itself so that it can use the printer?

I think you're getting confused. The printer being wireless or wired has nothing to do with how other computers can use it. The printer merely joins the network as either a wireless or wired client. Other computers, being clients of the same network, can use the printer regardless of whether they are wired or wireless. You'll be fine so long as you connect the printer to your network somehow.
