Hi guys

In iOS 7 you can set up the mail app so that it only plays the notification sound when you receive mail from a VIP. For the life of me I can't make that happen on the OSX mail app.

In Mail settings I have:
  • New messages sound: New messages sound
  • New message notifications: VIPs

In Notification Center I have:
  • Main alert style: none
  • Unticked "play sound for notifications"

What is happening with this current setup is that I'm getting the notification sound for all emails, not just from VIPs.

When I change the 'New messages sound' in Mail app to 'None' then I don't receive any notification sounds for emails - VIPs or not VIPs.

I've also tried creating a rule that if sender is VIP send notification but that doesn't work either.

Is it even possible to do what I want? Any help greatly appreciated!

It could be a bug (Mail has many, some have still carried over since the first release lol) or it could be that you have not set the rules correctly. I have various sounds depending on how I class certain people/organisations and I do this on an individual email or host basis.

You should have the rule "If *any* of the conditions are met" and then the VIP clicked. Then try selecting all the emails and "Apply Rules" from the contextual menu. If this doesn't work you could try rebuilding the mailbox, if it still doesn't work its probably a bug or you have another rule that is in conflict? How many people do you have as VIP's? If its a manageable number then you could just do as I do and individually input each email.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think I should even have to use a rule for this particular feature, but the one I trialled was if any sender is VIP send notification. I don't really want to add individual addresses to a rule because my VIP list is dynamic depending on what projects I have running at any particular time.

I think you're onto something suggesting that it might be a bug. Mavericks is pretty buggy at the moment...I'll hold out for the next update and see if that fixes it for me.

Thanks!
