Setup new iPhone 6s from iOS 9.0.1 iCloud backup?

When I get my iPhone 6s tomorrow, it'll be running iOS 9.

My current phone is running iOS 9.0.1

Will I be able to use my 9.0.1 backup to setup the iPhone 6s?

I was under the impression you can restore with a backup from a "future" iOS.

You and I will need to update it before restoring from a backup.

Literally: out of the box, set up as new and then after the update, select 'Erase All Content and Settings' from Settings>General>Reset and then restore from your iCloud backup.

If it appears as a useable backup during setup, then yes you can.

I guess I could also just plug it into iTunes and iTunes should automatically perform the iOS 9.0.1 update and then backup from my most recent 9.0.1 backup, I believe.

You'll need to activate it first, so it kind of defeats the object.

I have a feeling this might cause a few issues as I'd imagine a number of people getting the new iPhone 6S and 6S+ will be in the same boat. I can see a number of non techy people having a bit of a nightmare!

Just set up, update, reset all data all settings, set up again, restore from iCloud backup.
