Does anyone know if Apple is still paying the developers per download? Or maybe Apple was able to convince them to list the apps for free...but I don't see how the developers gain anything from that.

Just in case people are not aware, you can purchase the free app(s) on your iDevice and delete the app(s) while they are still downloading. This way you can just purchase the app for future use and not have it installed right away. Also by deleting while it's still downloading, you don't have to wait until it finishes (which is useful for larger apps). You just delete them like you normally do with any other app.

Does a developer really gain a sufficient amount of press by making something free? Does it benefit them? Especially at a time when many others are doing it, it doesn't give you a boost in the rankings.

I would have eventually bought a few of these apps, when I had time. Now I won't have to.

Downloaded a bunch right now...MANY THANKS.

If I dislike them, i can delete them but always have an iCloud DL if wanted in the future.

I did buy Over and Tiny Wings and was actually thinking of BUYING Tiny Wings HD over the weekend...glad i waited

Yea I download all of them and if I don't like them I just hide them.

While getting press coverage is great for the app its not the only thing that helps its sales. By giving away copies of the app you put the app in new hands which will help word of mouth sales. The app has to be good for the last part to work but all these are great apps. Be prepared to see most of them on the top paid charts after they go back to paid.

Our idea of a "good game" differs some.
I generally acquire an opinion on games I've actually played, for starters...

----------

My biggest knock against it is it's size. You can fit a lot of good games on there for a 1.2 GB install.

But free is free, I'll download it, uninstall it, and reinstall it when I buy a 32GB iPad in the fall. ^_^
It is a gigantic game. But games like that I generally play and then remove off the phone. Like all the Final Fantasy games, for instance... remembering to back up the saves, of course.

Same here. I'm currently playing XCOM on my iPhone, which takes up a whopping +3GB. But that's also the only game I'm playing right now, so no other games take up any space.

After I'm done I uninstall it, my saves are on the cloud, and good to go again with another game!

Infinity Blade II is an awesome game btw. Beating an enemy with some swift dodges and counters always brings alot of satisfaction.

App Store sub categories down?

I can access the App Store, but I can't get to the sub categories. Anyone else having this problem?

and you know i have played ib2 how?

woohoo, thanks apple, gonna download all of them.
those were some really expensive (for an app) apps which apple is giving away for free.:D

Is it Apple making them free or is it the companies? I'm confused now. Wouldn't Apple making it free like stealing money from the companies that developed the apps?

I'd guess that Apple is paying the developers so much per download up to a certain dollar amount.

too bad i had bought 4 of those before this offer, but i'm happy i got the rest of those for free

Already paid for the Day One app and it's great.

Needs an update, but still highly recommend picking it up for $0.

Oh my God, free stuff? First Apple screw us over by releasing new products, rendering my OLD 2005 PowerBook G4 COMPLETELY obsolete  Then they discount products that I paid for ages ago because I enjoyed them, and made them free? They should keep everything expensive for everybody else so I don't feel bad about my purchases.

Honestly, Apple's completely gone downhill since Steve died. Steve would never have allowed this. Tim Cook is a rubbish CEO. Apple should start innovating rather than spending their time in courtrooms. iOS 7 looks like it was designed by a child with crayons, whilst wearing oven gloves. Android rocks, Apple are just copying. Apple are doomed. /s

I think that's pretty much covered everything guys ;)

OMG, I think your rant actually made my Safari snappier!

Wow, servers must be getting hammered! Unbelievably slow to download these apps...

Too many junk apps and too many developers allowed to post the same app with the same or different price points and different cover photos. It's a Chinese wasteland. I'd rather have 500 quality apps than 900,000 filler apps.

Even though I downloaded them all to take a look to see how many would be fun or useful I think the same way with apps, just want a few good ones that I will use. Of course it never hurts to have the ability to download apps later if they got better depending what it is.

And for repeat apps, like flashlight!!!

Perhaps. It's a bit hard to know. I was thinking that the developers are providing their apps in exchange for the fantastic publicity they're getting from AAPL for their other apps. But your model of a dollar limit sounds quite sensible for both parties.

I was a bit naughty yesterday: when I saw the article on MR, i noted that Barefoot Atlas was free on Touch Press's FB page before the "official" announcement went out. Today, I asked them what the terms were for the promo; they told me they couldn't discuss the terms of the deal. Given all of the litigation around the iBookstore, I'm hardly surprised that AAPL keeps all of these details cranked down.

Probably doesn't have anything to do with the litigation. It would be kind of shocking if Apple disclosed these terms or didn't prohibit the developers from doing them same. For competitive reasons alone.
