I’m upgrading from the 8 to an XR black. Out of nowhere I had paint flaking off near the bottom off my SG 8 even though the babied the hell out of the phone - I just hope it isn’t common.

Why are you starting new threads asking the same basic question? If there were issues with the anodizing on iPhones there would be all sorts of threads on this and every other forum.. Just because you had an issue doesn’t mean it’s widespread.

I suppose you’re right. I’ll calm down now. I ordered a black XR and I don’t know why it’s just worrying me that it’ll chip as well. Pretty messed up thought process I realise but I guess I’m just looking for some sort of validation that it won’t happen.

Even if you chip your iPhone XR when you receive it after the initial usage, that’s part of owning a smart phone, they’re not meant to stay in pristine condition. It’s a tool that you use every single day, and when it’s used as much as it is, you have to expect some type of ‘Wear and tear’. Fortunately, it’s just a tech device and after a while, you likely won’t care anymore once it receives its first scratch eventually.

I had 2 7+ses and both had the paint chipping in the back.

My Space Gray watch has the paint chipping in the back, too.

So yes, this is common, and is a likely proposition for your brand new XR.

Chipping in the back is your case then - maybe clean once a week? What colour XR did you get?

Got a white one after 10 years of black iPhones, so this one won't chip.
I actually just checked in store - the white one is anodised as well and with a milky white coating this time. The white coating on the XR isn't like the bare aluminium of the earlier silver phones so the white one is as likely to chip as the other ones.

The anodised sides of my white iPhone XR look exactly the same as my wife’s old white iPhone 6. I just got it out the cupboard and checked side by side. It also looks the same as my aluminium Apple Watch which has proved extremely durable and chip/scratch resistant. I haven’t got one single mark on it and being on my wrist that does get knocked occasionally.

However, the silver will “chip” just as much as the other colours. But the advantage of the silver is that any chip or scratch will be silver on silver and you are far less likely to notice it.

Could you post a quick photo of both?

If I recall a previous thread of yours I think the issue wasn't so much the anodized coating was flaking off but you had a dbrand skin on your device and it stuck to your device so well it may have taken some of the coating off. It's kind of crazy when you think the things we use to protect our devices (skins, certain cases, etc) can actually do more harm than good.

Here you go. Not the best of pictures but they look very similar.

i have a black XR. been using it for around 5 months. no chipping.

a benefit of a black XR is if you chip, you can easily find a same shade black marker to color the chip and it will be pretty hard to see the chip.

i also use a matt black cover with b&w wallpaper, giving my phone a totally matt black theme. you can consider doing this if your chipping is really bad. in fact i prefer this than going naked, because the glass is a real fingerprint magnet and it will oily and greasy very quickly.

so i have no worries about my XR chipping
