What do you mean by if he de-authorities my computer I will no longer be able to use that app? Say if i load the app on my iphone then he de-authorizes my computer so the next time i sync to my computer that app will no longer work?

Yes, that's pretty much it, according to what was explained to me in this thread.

But I *do* have a suggestion:
when talking about songs, videos or apps, it's something you can add and remove from your iPhone/iPod.. and here lies the "problem" with the authorization (since after the de-authorization you can no longer use them).

BUT when it comes to *upgrading* your iPod touch (examples: the January Software Update, the 2.0 Update) it's a little different: since it's something you only add once and it remains on the iPod, you can purchase it for 9 dollars, and then you can have ALL your friends come over to your house to sync their iPods to your computer and have, thus, the software upgrade. Your friend's content will be deleted, but when they get home, they can re-sync their iPods with their libraries, and then they'll have had the update "for free".
You can always divide the price then :D

I'm talking about the iPod touch only because the updates for iPhone are always free..

I've been using the drag and drop .ipa method with my friends since I got the iPhone. Saved tons of money :D

Can you explain or point me in the right direction so I can do some reading on this method as I am new to Apple products in general?

help!!!

ok I tried this trick and was able to download all my apps in to my friends itunes by logging into my iTunes account and downloading all my previous paid apps...

But the problem is that my friend is not able to sync the programs that I've added into his library

I think I have to authorize his account but how do I do that and is that the problem why it's not working

I don't believe this is correct. When you authorize another computer, this doesn't in any way give them access to your credit card information or give them purchase power under your ID. It simply allows your already purchased content to be accessible to them. I've had my computer authorized for other people before and when they purchase music it doesn't pull up my information or allow them to clear out their info and put in mine and have my password just show up. Authorization is a completely different process from actually signing into the store using your account information.

can you confirm this?

I just bought an iPod touch for my girlfriend's birthday, and decided to preload it with my current iPhone's library in the meantime (just so she can get a feel of how it works) until she decides to sync with her own, and setting up her own iTunes account etc... but I want her to be able to still use my purchases... but access iTunes on her own account

Nice... i was thinking about posting this same thing.

Nice... i was thinking about posting this same thing. My girlfriend and I have been doing this between our 2 phones for a while now. I buy an app, share it with her.... bing bang boom she can use it. It says, "you've already purchased this app".

I know she uses my itunes email address though, so maybe that helps with the situation?

I should be able to confirm by tonight or tomorrow night at the latest, though I'm sure someone else can jump in before then. I know generic purchases will work, but I'm still waiting for confirmation regarding apps specifically.

I wonder if I plug in my brother's iphone and sync with my itunes, would he get all the music and photos that's in my itunes library? If not, how do i copy music and photos from one iphone to another?

You can only do this if your computer is the only one his phone will be synced with. If he has another computer he's been syncing his iPhone with, as soon as you connect it to your computer and try to load any content on it, iTunes will prompt you to erase his phone and sync it with your computer instead of his. The only way to do what you're wanting is to have multiple phones synced with the same library, which is possible; unfortunately, it's not possible to sync one phone with multiple libraries.

So if I don't have the music files in the computer anymore and it's in my iphone, can I still get it to my brother's iphone? In other words, it's like copying from one iphone to another.

Im pretty sure there are programs out there that can extract the music library from your iphone to itunes. By default you can only go one way from what I understand.

downloading necessity?

the main challenge i see with this is that you must download the app again. What about something like phonesaber? Here is a great app, it is free, but apple just pulled it. My second iphone will take a week to get here and i would like to put this app on it. any suggestions???

Ok I did this this weekend with my buddies ipod touch. We tried to log onto his account on my laptop and authorized it then tried purchasing enigmo, which he purchased and has on his ipod. But itunes prompted us to purchase it again and not "you have already purchased this app would you like to download again". So what we did was log back onto my account and clicked something like download purchases which backed up all my apps into my library under apps. Then we connected his ipod did the same thing and manually synced his one app enigmo into my library. Connected mine again and clicked sync apps and it put enigmo onto my iphone. Then we deauthorized his account from my computer and I played my new game for half the price.

Using the "Buy Application"method a 2nd time

When I try this, I get the screen that warns "Are you sure you want to buy and download the application" rather than "You have already purchased this item". Do we blow by the warning (it has a check box to not show it again) or has iTunes changed the game?

Thanks,

Al

Wow

Well i read about 7/8 of the posts.

This is how it is intended to be used at lest its how i see it.

I have been doing it since the first iphone came out with my wife

with music and app's

your computer has to be authorized.
And you only have 5 install's of an application how every you want to use it.
if you want to use the install of your phone and your wifes phone then so be it.
you have 3 backups incase something happens

who ever's phone you put this on need your login info for itunes so they have to be trusted.

Here's my question:

Say you share the app, Dizzy Bee, between you and your wife. Say you and your wife are at two different save points in the game, meaning different data is stored in both apps on your iPhones. What happens when you both "backup" the apps onto your computer?

Are there now two backup files of the same app? Does one override the other? It seems that this could get messy.

Upgrade?

On a related note, if I were to ever upgrade to a new iPhone (which I'm sure I will eventually do), will I have any problems transferring my apps to the new phone? They're starting to build up and I really don't want to purchase them a second time. They would never be on multiple iTunes or iPhones simultaneously, so there wouldn't be a problem. Correct?
