Looking for a different approach to this "less rural subject", I tried to combine a loose style with your idea of a toned background.
Not there yet, but eager to explore further ;-)

I'm using a 10.5 iPad Pro (to work at home, not outside).
If you want to take the iPad out in the street, you may like to check out Rob Sketcherman's advice.

Two very different styles - both done in Procreate on my iPad Pro 11". One is a Tomb Raider fan art I made to celebrate the franchise turning 25 this year, and then the other is some concept art for a graphic novel I've had swimming around in my head for the last few years. 🙂
