I thought it would be fun to start a thread to share our ProRAW edits. Share your creative edits! :) Here's a quick one I did to show before/after. Edited with Affinity Photo.

ProRAW does not improve the pictures you take. Instead, it provides you with a RAW copy (with all computational features embedded) of the images that you can edit later with more flexibility than jpegs.
Yup. A nice option to have if you ever need to use your phone as a backup camera on a shoot and don’t want the Apple eggheads to decide what it should look like for you. ;) I can actually think of a handful of instances in the past couple of years where this feature could have made me money, so I’m grateful to have it even if it’s just for occasional use.

Here are some very fast and unscientific comparison shots. The poinsettias were both processed with Photos using the exact same settings (copied and pasted image adjustments). As you can see, the HEIC retains less dynamic range to work with in processing. These were taken with intentionally poor light and heavy backlighting of the flower. The two shots of the books were taken hand-stabilized on the back of my office chair. They are unmodified (except I converted the DNG to TIFF so it could be uploaded here).
First impression: improved dynamic range available for post-processing. The jury is still out on how much sharpening is happening behind the scenes on the new proRAW files.

Edit: the TIFF had to be uploaded to Flickr

When you transfer the photo from Photos to Affinity photo, is the RAW shot supposed to convert to a .jpeg? I thought the file would remain as .dng.

I posted this in another thread but I'll add it here.

Here's a quick comparison between parts of two images, image on the left being 12 Pro Max ProRAW processed in Lightroom and on the right, JPEG straight out of the phone, no processing -

I am not a beginner-beginner when it comes to photography, however, I am not that much farther ahead than a beginner.

So here are my edits, and I would really appreciate it if some of you would comment and let me know how I did because I want to make sure I am editing these correctly, generally speaking. It would be a big help to me.

Thank you in advance!

in fairness though what's important is how they look to you as different people will have different preferences on their favourite photo.this is why I love raw as some will want a brighter vibrate look while others not so much. least with raw you can make it as you prefer your photos to look

what did you edit in raw in terms what areas you improved it from?

Well, as you can see in the first (non-edited) photo, it is much brighter. I felt like the lights were blown out just a little too much and the sky was lighter than it actually was when I took the picture, however, I know that is due to Apple's Night Mode and other computational additions. So, all I really did was just darken it a bit.

I know that everyone has their own preferences, which I why I said in my post "generally speaking" if I edited the second photo so just in general terms does it look better or worse? I get that it is hard to say when you were not the one taking the picture and whatnot, but just if you were looking at the two pictures and did not know which one was edited (which you do), which picture would you think looks better? I guess that is what I was trying to get at.

I am just trying to get better at photography every day, as a hobby now, but who knows what could come of it in the future.

Thank you so much for your reply though!

I would say your edit looks good I think it looks more realistic to I'm guessing what you eyes likely saw based on the highlights. The building seems more realistic

Thanks for posting these. The ProRaw image is nicely processed. Would it be possible for you to post process the JPEG image in LR so that it looks as good as possible? And then post the processed jpeg alongside the ProRAW. That would be a more fair comparison. Thanks!

Thank you for your kind words! It is nice to know there are still people out there that are kind and like to help and encourage their fellow man. Hope you have a wonderful, blessed day!

I cannot wait to see some more of your pictures.

Godspeed!

I'll take a shot at it. The biggest issue is the oversharpening in the image though the color needs correcting to be true to life (I didn't need to adjust color in the ProRAW version - biggest edit there was lighting).

Here's a cut at it. The iPhone's JPEG was more difficult to work with compared to the RAW image which only took a few seconds of editing. Oversharpening in an original is hard to deal with.

So, I haven't tried Affinity on iPad yet. I just "air-dropped" the dng file to my mac and edited with the desktop version of Affinity.
