When I got my iPad 3 on launch day, I signed up for Verizon's 2GB data plan in the Settings app. Now I have 2 iPhone 5s on a shared data plan with Verizon, and I'm thinking about canceling the iPad's separate plan and adding it to the shared plan with my iPhones. Is there an advantage either way, adding the iPad to the shared plan vs keeping it on its own plan? I don't use a whole lot of data on the iPad so I figured I might be able to save a few bucks each month by combining them.

The cost saving should be more than enough reason to switch for me...

You'll save $20/month going this route. If you find yourself using more, pay an extra $10 for the next tier and save yourself $10/month

I think you'll have to grab a new sim if I'm not mistaken...

Generally speaking:

A) If you don't use more than 2gb data per device/month
B) You have more than 3 data devices
C) You aren't giving up a grandfathered unlimited plan

Then the data sharing plans can save you money. There are some variations where it wouldn't, but in general, that's how I've calculated the break-even analysis.

For me, I ended up saving over $140/month moving all our devices to a shared plan, ended up with MORE data allocation and included hotspot for every device. Worked out in my favor in a big way. But as always, YMMV. Do the math for yourself.

If you have a minimum of 3 devices then a shared plan MAY make sense. Do the math and know how much data you are currently paying for...
