Shared iTunes Library Help

Can you take songs off of a shared library? I am trying to, but it won't work.

Technically, yes. It's easier and probably more legitimate to ask the owner of the shared library to give you the song(s) though, assuming the owner isn't bound to a legal obligation not to.

The owner is a family member, would they have to burn the music to cd's?

Yes, they can burn the songs to CDs (data CD is fine) or copy the files over the network. 🙂
