Hello,

I’ve decided to keep running my personal Mac Pro 5,1 for my studio photography work, but I'm looking to upgrade my monitor setup. I currently swap a 24" LED Cinema Display between my work laptop MBP M3 and my cMP. I want to replace it with an Apple Studio Display to get better screen real estate and critical color calibration for photo editing (transitioning over to Capture One / Darktable).

I need some technical advice from the cMP experts on getting the Studio Display to play nice with my hardware.

My Current Setup:

  • Machine: Mac Pro 5,1 running Big Sur via OpenCore
  • GPU: AMD Vega 56 (with Pixlas Mod)
  • The Missing Link: I have a GC-Titan Ridge card still sitting in its box, completely unconfigured.
I know I need to install, flash, and configure the Titan Ridge card to act as the Thunderbolt bridge, looping the DisplayPort outputs from my Vega 56 into the card's DP inputs.

My questions for the community:

  1. What are the exact requirements or best practices to make the Studio Display work properly?
  2. Firmware & OCLP: Does the Titan Ridge require a specific custom firmware flash (like DSM2 or similar) to handle the Studio Display properly, or will standard flashed firmware do? Are there specific OpenCore .plist flags or boot arguments I need to watch out for?
  3. Resolution & Features: Will it natively scale to 5K with the Vega 56 over this setup, or am I going to run into scaling quirks? Do things like the built-in speakers, webcam, and basic macOS brightness controls function through the Titan Ridge, or will I need third-party utilities?
I'm fully committed to keeping this tower rolling, so I'd love to hear from anyone who has successfully deployed a Titan Ridge / Studio Display combo on a classic Mac Pro.

Thanks in advance!
