Sharing External HDD with MBP and Windows

So what's the solution for me? Since mac cant read from NTFS shall i just format it to HFS+ and use MacDrive on the windows machine?

Mac can read from NTFS it can't write to it unless you get FUSE/NTFS-3G but I had no luck with that so far.

gday roger. i may have confused you a tad in my wording. macdrive is a pc program (installed directly onto the pc) which gives R/W access to macintosh drives. i think the reason this program was made was for bootcamp situations where users needed to write to their OSX partitions.

Thanks a lot DoFoT9. i have just installed BC and WinXPPro. Extremely pleased with the results so far. Very smooth, very fast. One the the (only now!) verified reasons I bought the MBP. I am running very demanding MS FlightSim X smoothly, for one thing!

Now if we could have the MBP's definitely inadequate WiFi performance issue resolved, especially, since it has also been pointed out elsewhere in the Forums), MBP's WiFi performs very well UNDER WINDOWS!!!

Now, I want to try Mac Magic to be able to read/write to the Mac partition - of course, Mac OSX can already READ the Win partition. Will installing Mac Magic in any way impact access speed performance by either Mac OSX or WIndows t their RESPECTIVE partition?? I plan to run apps in both MACOSX and Windows (besides FSX!) which rely on fast disk access. I do not want to jeopardize that so far, the MBP provides for that!

Good to hear that everything is working well. BootCamp certainly isn't a bad program, it's an excellent one!!

I had a quick look for Mac Magic and couldn't seem to find it, could you possibly mean MacDrive?. If you do I can assure you that there will not be any slow down speeds. I don't have any benchmarks to clarify but if you like I could copy something in OSX, then copy the same thing under XP and MacDrive and post the times.

Sorry about this. What was I thinking??? I guess I was just caught up in the stupor of realizing how well the MBP runs Windws under BC. Some "Magic" I suppose. Yes: MacDrive. Does MD in any way "modify" the file structure of the MacOSX partition? Thanks for the info!

haha ok good we are on the same wave length now!

i assure you, Macdrive will do absolutely nothing to the formatting of your HFS+ drive, nor your XP drive. all it simply does is read the drive (not exactly sure, maybe provide compatible drivers??). it wont do anything to harm your drive (well it is being used in winblows so no promises 😛) but apart from that, everything is safe, nothing will be altered.!

Thanks a lot for the good info. It's just that so far i have been careful and considerate in fooling around with MAC OSX and BC/Win. It all performs extremely well and i want to keep it that way...
Now, gotta install some virus stuff on the Win side, even though I have decided to do most of my online activity on the MAC OS side, and just pass to the Win side what I might need for Win to use. That's why I want to be able for Win to read the MAC OS partition (to pull in favorites, book marks, downloaded upgrades for Win programs, etc...). Truly, I have enjoyed just being able to boot up Mac OS w/o waiting an eternity for Norton IS and WebRoot SpySweeper to do their things. OTOH, I certainly hope that all the hoopla about MAC OSX not needing much (or any for that matter) virus or malware protection is accurate, not part of some Apple (and dedicated Applenauts) marketing ploy to have people drop Win for Mac...
What do u think: little / or NO chance of virus or other malware in Mac OSX??

no worries i hope i helped you understand and what not.
for viruses/malware/spyware on OSX, if you think that i have been using macs for quite a long time..and i have never even used antivirus software, and i have never detected a virus (for mac, i have recieved pc viruses). i believe that you dont need any software at this current point in time. its still safe because there just arent any mac viruses yet!! its good 🙂
