Sharing internet connection to iMac G3

Hi, I have an old iMac G3.

I am trying to let it access the internet from my macbook.

I have enabled internet sharing and plugged in an ethernet cable, the macbook is connected via wi-fi and yet the iMac refuses to pick the internet up.

Does anyone know what I can do?

Did the iMac receive a valid IP address? Does the MacBook have a valid IP address on its ethernet port?

It says it has an ip address however on my macbook it just says self assigned IP
