I need to get some files off a 7.5 machine with an AAUI ethernet connector. What's the best way to get them off?

I could use Netatalk under Linux to simulate Appletalk for 7.5 to connect to.

If 7.5 supports TCP/IP, I could set up an FTP connection. Though I'm unsure if 7.5 supports it.

All of these would be connected to an ethernet switch (the Power Mac can use an AAUI to RJ-45 adapter). I haven't set up a network in ages, so I've probably forgotten something.

I saw your post a while back and didn't respond because I don't have an answer. But I'll take a stab here.

What machine are you trying to copy the files to?

I've got a IIci in my garage that runs 7.5. It's got Appletalk and TCP/IP. Sounds like you have the same. But all you mention is connecting it to a switch. Were you just wondering if System 7.5 has this capability or were you trying to ask how to get the files off using this capability?

I need to get files off the 7.5 machine any way I can. They're big files, totaling around a gigabyte, so floppy disks are out of the question.

I don't have another classic Mac so I need to send the files over ethernet. I have an XP/Debian machine and a Snow Leopard/Mavericks machine. What's the best way?

No, Leopard was the last OS X that could fileshare AFP with Classic Mac.
Yeah, that's what I thought. I have to use shared printers from the G4 running Leopard here at work just to print from the 10.9.1 Mac Pro I work on. Both printers we use are Appletalk.

I have no idea based on what machines the OP is using how to get the files off.

Now that I know 7.5 has TCP/IP, there's no reason why Netatalk shouldn't work as a faux AFP server.

Thanks!

No problem. You may have to futz with things a bit. There's two control panels.

You want to set the IP address (either dynamic or static) in the TCP/IP control panel. Then you need to turn Appletalk on using the Appletalk control panel and tell it to use Ethernet.

Lastly, to turn on File sharing you'll have to load up a third control panel. Users and Groups I believe, but not sure if it was called that in System 7.

So 7.5 doesn't have TCP/IP.

Regardless, I just set up a PC AT server and moved everything onto there.

Thanks all.
