Is there a way to hook up an iMac to a sharp aquos tv?
I've gotten a cable to go from the thunderbolt/lightning bolt port to hdmi, plugged in both and nothing. Doesn't seem to matter what ports I use. Getting really frustrated!

Assuming, the cable works properly that is all you should need to do. Is the Mac actually recognizing a secondary display (i.e. your television?)

Make sure you set the TV to whatever input the HDMI is going into.
