Why does Apple always face shortage in supply? Does Samsung? I'm quite confused. Apple should have an excellent supply chain. They can afford more expensive methods of production given their wide profit margins. Yet they continually struggle to meet demand. Why?

factories have a limit and you can't just build one anywhere. you also have to leave room for upgrades, etc

even then low yields means you need engineers to fix the problem, not just write a check

Do we know for fact that the screens are NOT igzo?

Not totally sure, but I'm pretty confident that IPS refers to the pixel display technology and IGZO refers to the material used to make the "transparent wires" used to address each pixel. Sort of analogous to light bulbs vs. the type of wire used to connect them to a power supply (e.g. aluminum vs. copper wires.)

And I've heard that IGZO can be used in OLED screens as well. Different pixel chemistry, same low-resistance IGZO conductors. IGZO has 40% less resistance than the current transparent conductor technology (amorphous silicon.)

Just as a thought experiment, let's say that Apple has already implemented IGZO-based IPS LCD panels in the iPhone 5S and both new A7-powered iPads. Do you think they would hype IGZO? Or would they just hype the fantastic battery life + lighter weight + thinner enclosure? The way they did at last week's iPad event? I'd say they do the latter.

Love Sharp displays and LG for that matter, just hoping Apple doesn't shift anything to Samsung!

Never buy on day one, let the reviews come in and the early adopters raise all the issues before jumping in.

To be fair number 4 was not an issue at all, just something for the media circus to get talking about. Nothing failed because of it and it didn't get hot enough to cause anyone injury. Also it looks like 1 is a bad batch of batteries which could happen at any time in a devices life cycle.

I've bought day one plenty of times. Every iPhone since the first in 07...to my 5S now. The iPad 2,3,4 and now the iPad air in a few days plus the retina mini. I've never had a problem ever. Well I take that back,my 3GS had a bad battery issue. But with the 1 year warranty from apple I never worry about buying day one. I have always and will continue to do so. Maybe I've just been lucky?

This looks like it's going to be a mad house trying to buy one of these day one.

this is ridiculous,

suppliers usually know quite a long time in advance that they will have to manufacture upcoming products

how can they be short on stock ?

and considering how long they have been working with Apple already, how could this happen ?

i believe it's simply an excuse made up by Apple just to force people buying the more expensive iPad Air during iPad mini retina shortage

Really, people are blaming Apple for a Sharp screw up

Simple. Because the manufacturing process is *very* difficult and Apple is asking the company to manufacture millions of units in an extremely short period.

Said by no one ever.

/smacking myself for sinking so low.

what can i say I'm not a sheep but you're clearly a knob yes man (boy)

Anyone who has in the past had a rMBP ghosting problem and had to swap out the LG display (which is what all 15" rmbp ship with and are all the models on display in retail stores) are replaced with for the Samsung display regrets it and it takes a long time to get used to that yellow p is sed on look.

"said by no one ever" (f king tosser comment man!)

This is getting ridiculous, display technology should be at the top of the list for Apple, nowadays it makes up a big portion of what Apple's products are (and we haven't even gotten to the television unicorn yet). Apple has about $150B in the bank with seemingly nothing to spend it on, can they not begin manufacturing their own displays? They have done an amazing job designing chips from scratch, starting just a few years ago, why not start with displays? Yes, it would take years to hire the proper people, gain the expertise, and ramp up to production, but come on, why not start? They are constantly having issues with displays and they increasingly cannot count on the best and biggest display mfr. Samsung.

Apple always says they want to own key technologies, right? So why not displays? Why be at the mercy of these unreliable or even hostile display manufacturers when you can do it yourself and control the whole process and pricing? I don't see displays becoming an unimportant technology for Apple in the near future, if ever. If anything, they will become even more critical.

There is an element of luck in it, for instance the light leak issue with LG panels on the iPad and scratched cases on iPhone 5. There problems were sorted out quickly but day one purchasers are the ones taking the chance when problems like this pop up.

That's funny,I do remember the light leak, but I wasn't effected then. Also "scuff gate" on the iPhone 5 I wasn't effected because I bought the white one. So...I think it's luck. You're correct, day one adopters have a greater chance of encountering issues.

It's never a good idea to be dependent on one supplier. It's good to diversify sources. Even if Apple and Samsung had a good relationship I would hope Apple would cultivate multiple sources.

I agree but Samsung already owns a stake in Sharp. Better to have one good supplier than several bad suppliers. Personally I think Apple needs to have a tighter hold on their supply chain. They could use the cash pile stored outside the US to buy up or buy into suppliers who are almost all located outside the US.

its also because apple starts and ramps up production very quickly just before launch unlike most companies. they also dynamically change the production as the demand moves in. this is done by most companies but its also what defines apples production strategy. they minimise stocking by adopting a lock-step production-demand within weeks of product announcement. but sometimes, that ramping up doesn't work very well when the suppliers are incompetent or just can't keep up.
