I received the privacy screen version of the Shellrus Sapphire X for iPhone 12 Pro Max, excited to install and finally boot my phone up, when air bubbles began to appear. After attempting to squeeze the bubbles out... this happened.

For $80, I’m thoroughly disappointed and they don’t seem to be responding to any of my emails. They do offer a replacement for one free use per policy, but have not received any confirmation on this. I searched through YouTube and found comments that said the same thing.

First, I’m sure this product is going to be great after I finally get it on there.. but for now, be warned. You may be signing up for this.

Anyone have a similar experience with the install/customer service?

WOW, that sucks. So much for that tough Sapphire glass.

If you purchased through Amazon just return or exchange it to them.

Try a 3 pack of iCarez on Amazon for $8.95 as they work perfect. Not sure is they make a privacy version though.

My guess is with that really high scratch resistance makes them a bit brittle so they can’t take as much pressure being put on them.

My Imos sapphire protector for 12 pro max also had defective adhesive around the edges. They are in the process of sending me another one. I’d reach out to see if they have another batch incoming.

I’ve reached out to them through all their platforms 4 days ago... no response/acknowledgement! I understand that the sapphire is not as impact resistant, but at the same time the application process should not have defective adhesive.

Yeah, the adhesive they use is pretty crappy. Took me forever to work out all the air bubbles.

How did you do it without breaking it? I suspect you need to get the install perfect on the first try. I feel like when I started readjusting is when the adhesive runs out.

Where did you get the IMOS? Thanks

I will do that tomorrow when I have my other phone with me to take the pictures. But I can tell you that the Screen Protector almost go to the edge. Maybe only 1mm left. It is the same as for all Edge to Edge Screen Protectors I tried before. Even a bit more than the ESR I tested before.

Thanks. In the past, I’ve used the iMOS because it was nearly edge to edge and worked perfectly with my case to form a near tight space, leaving less space for dust to get under. However it was very expensive, and I switched to the iCarez which offered very similar edge to edge coverage.

However, I was disappointed in the iCarez for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Even with a near perfectly alignment, there was still a lot of exposed screen along the edges.

I was going to try the ESR to see if it offers better edge to edge protection, but based on what you just said, I may have to dig deeper in my wallet to get the Shellrus.

Just wanted to wait for confirmation on your part. My tolerance of edge to edge may be different than yours and I don’t want to make a $70 mistake since there’s no return for this.

How’s yours compared to my photo?

Mine has definitely less exposed bezel. I was not able to take a photo yet. There is a shellrus Video on youtune for the iPhone 12 but it is a bit hard to see:

Cant tel but it looks like there is still some exposed glass at the edges.

I just installed the non privacy version of the sapphire. I had two micro bubbles that I just couldn't let go---this thing had to be perfect at this price. So I begrudgingly went in for the feral dust specks. It actually took a few attempts, and I thought I was going to ruin it. Turned out to be absolutely bubble-less! I honestly cannot tell the difference between naked and sapphire. It blends in so perfectly. No issue paying $80 for what will basically be a lifetime of totally scratch-free screen experience. No regrets.

I did have to press with some pressure to get some of the air out (which they do mention in the instructions). I knew sapphire would be easier to break than glass----so I kept that in mind the whole time.

There's a YouTube of someone doing a very thorough test and analysis on like 20 screen protectors. Nothing beat the sapphire for scratch (and I think smoothness/water roll). It place in the bottom third for breaking. I rarely drop my phone but ALWAYS notice micro scratches. Sapphire will be like having that fresh, out of the box screen---every time I use it.

How did you get the air bubbles out successfully?

Using the stickers they provided. I've done many of these protector installs (new phone every year). Hate using the sticker as they can bring along their own unwanted visitors. I got lucky tho. Probably lifted the screen half way about 3 times in the process. No issues with adhesion---even the corner tips where problems usually start.

For the bubbles....I just lifted and pressed firmly from the middle toward the edges. Normally don't have to press so firmly but seems the sapphires needs it. Pretty stiff.

I never saw a screen protector which covered really everything. They don‘t do that because it would break much more easily. I used icarez and Flolab in the past. Flolab are my favorite unzil I tried the Shellrus. I tried to shoot some pictures but it was very hard to focus.

That protector looks great! I love the idea of a sapphire protector but the price is just too high for my usecase. This year is the first time I've ever used a screen protector. I ordered one for my wife, and it came in a 3-pack (ESR) so I put one on mine.

For me, the screen protector is a cheap and disposable cover to keep the actual device scratch free. If my protector gets scratched I don't really care. That said... if the sapphire was around ~$40, it would then make sense to me to go that route.

Everyone has different usecases for these things, and I think that for people who are really sensitive to scratches, these are awesome.

Thanks a lot! These are good photos. I know no screen protector can be completely edge to edge, but as long as it's really close, I'm satisfied. This is a lot better than the iCarez I have for my 12's Pro Max.

Can you possibly take some closeups of the ESR like Cruncher did? I had these in my Amazon cart but still haven't checked out because the reviews doesn't clearly show the edges. Thanks!

Can you describe the process that you went through to install correctly please? They told me that a new one wouldn’t ship until 12/28 and I’d love to be prepared when the time comes to install it 🙂

Not much to it really. Just turned on hot shower and had canned air. Wiped with the proved zeiss wipe. Let the glass drop itself using the provided guide. Pressed firmly from middle to edges. Noticed some dust so lifted edges and used sticker. Probably the best thing I can tell you is that it’s definitely possible to get it perfectly applied. It’s not one of those cheap protectors where there’s no adhesion or the adhesion on the edge is crap. This one will work perfectly if you’re just patient with it.
