Shift 1, 2, 3 won't work

Basically, the shift + numbers won't work. The Shift obviously works to capitalize things, but not to make an exclamation mark, dollar sign, etc, whats wrong, help. Ok, I just noticed it only doesn't work in the message part of mail. It seems to work in the address part, etc but not the message part. I'm running leopard

Try logging in and out? Restart the application with the problem? This usually happens to me after running monolingual and a restart solves it.
