I used Sandmarc - the only downside is they 'screw' in rather than bayonet. However the quality of the class is pretty good. Their anamorphic one is fabulous. I shot some stuff on the iPhone using the lenses and posed it up on YT if you want to see.

Wow, that is impressive!

Nice camera work, like all your overcrank shots.
yes you are a pro!

No I don't. I saw you mention them and was going to look them up.
I have all the Moment lenses and use the Filmic Pro video and still camera apps. Moment glass is great, particularly the anamorphic lens.
But the investment is substantial.

Absolutely. It’s around 700 usd for all the lenses and a case. IMO not worth it.

I’d have some cash invested in a gimbal and put the rest towards an iPhone 11 or 11 pro.

The thing to remember here, as an apparently professional video creator is that it's physics. Yes - you can get amazing results with the right kit - but at the end of the day you're strapping a piece of glass onto another piece of glass (or plastic!) and that is always going to be a trade off.

YES- some of these external lenses are big and bulky - but they do give you a tonne more options if you want to make some decent content on the phone BUT of course there's the financial trade off as well as the practical 'bulk' trade off.

IMO you have to balance them both. If you are a professional film maker and you're shooting movies on an iPhone with a 1k investment in lenses/filters and a gimbal I don't see the point in not investing in an actual camera which will handle and perform equally if not better. If you're kitting a phone up so much it loses the initial point of having the 'always ready' device.

Sure - I've used my phone on paid gigs- I've also used it to prove a point about shooting on a mobile device.

Once you need more than a small pouch for a mobile kit - you're possibly devaluing the reason to be shooting on a mobile device.

I'd say that 90% of people using a mobile setup professionally are doing it to prove a point.

Odd, I purchased a case just like this last year within a month of the new phones being released. I use it occasionally for up close photos but past that nah. Just strange this is being discussed months later.. obviously a different brand then I purchased.. go figure.

These cases have been around for a long time - but this one is because it's for the new phones and it's CES..

Right, that's why I really don't get the hype behind it. This has been released already, just not this specific company which I guess is why it is mentioned. Just strange to me since I've been using it for months on and off already... but I guess the whole CES thing is what grabs people?

Judging by some of the comments here, I think Macrumours need to start specifying that people are under no obligation to purchase any of the reviewed products.

Yep, I hate all the crying about "just use a DSLR" like there's something wrong with trying to get more out of the cameras on an [infinitely more portable] iPhone. Why is it wrong to desire pictures at a level somewhere between "stock iPhone" and "inexpensive DSLR"?

I mean, sure there's better equipment available than this, but that describes the equipment--DSLR or other--owned by literally everyone in this thread.

that's one step before implementing a built-in slider on an iphone case

Umm, I think it does slide?

Read the return policy carefully, if you are thinking about trying this out to see if it's something of use / quality. Notably, anything on sale is not returnable. And just about everything is marked down by $5 or $10. In fact, when I look at applicable products for my 11 Pro Max, 17 of 18 products it filters down to are listed as being discounted (e.g., show a slashed through price).

The full policy is here: (https://shiftcam.com/pages/returns-policy). Key excerpts are below as of 1/6/2020:

"We hope you are pleased and happy with ShiftCam Products at Shiftcam.com. However, if the product itself is defective or damaged on arrival, you can return your purchase within 30 days of delivery for a refund of the full purchase price (shipping costs are not refundable, and if your order with free shipping, we will not refund the postage cost that used for your order’s delivery).

Please note that returns are not allowed for the purpose of getting a future promotional deal, and ONLY regular priced items may be returned and refunded. Unfortunately, all sale items (including any order with discount code applied order) cannot be refunded."

If you have any issues, you may very well be in trouble. Even if you buy something and it's broken upon arrival, does the second paragraph in the excerpt above supersede the first? e.g., if you bought something on sale and it arrives shattered, no refund for you? It certainly sounds like at a minimum, if you were to get a broken product (that wasn't discounted), they are going to charge you back for shipping (both directions) if you exceeded the "free shipping" hurdle at $75 to start. Maybe the right thing to do if you are really curious is disclaim the discount (if they would even let you) and get in writing from them how much outbound shipping is. At least you would know the financial risk you are taking.

So is this a company willing to stand behind its products? I know they are a startup (and capital is probably tight), but there are plenty of others who have do-right, no-gotcha policies.

As Seen on TV, order now and get a second one free (just pay handling)

I think you just proved my point.

MacRumors really should take down this entire article. Shiftcam appears to be a fraudulent scam that is incapable of delivering on their promise. They were slightly communicative at the beginning about production/shipping snafus (but only after being pestered by backers on social media), and they've since gone silent running and there's no guarantee that they ever will ship anything.
