This is cool, but the whole browser thing is getting out of hand. How many browsers can you possibly have? With Safari and the last Explorer most people can do everything they need to do. There are also great options like Firefox, Camino, and Mozzilla from Mozzilla.org.
I hope this person does a really great job that pushes everyone else, but I don't see him becoming rich from this. (Unless apple hires him and makes him head of the Safari team or something.)

tried it and it is now my default browser....and this is coming from someone who just purchased opera a few weeks ago.

some ppl do stuff like this for a hobby, most coders who produce freeware software have jobs too, unless if they're highschool/university students, then they have school.

I'm liking this browser so far, i've customized it to look like safari (brushed look too), and it's pretty decent, has tonnes of customization, just the way i wanted safari to be :)

Confused…

But didn't several developers of Mac browsers claim that Safari would effectively kill the browser 'market' for MacOS.

Or was that just a stream of bovine excrement from people who didn't have the guts to compete.

well i was using safari, but i recently switched to omniweb 5. i just like some the features it has to offer, but i have a feeling with all these browsers coming out apple has been working on a new badass version of safari, so if they do come out with 2.0 ill switch.

'twas submitted that way, and I didn't notice until now. I'll change it. :p

That was fast, good job. Anyways i think Shiira is very similar to Safari, they have nearly the same features, but Shiira buttons are really ugly so I'll stick to Safari, though Shiira it's another nice browser for my collection.

I'm trying it out now - it honesly seems overall faster than Safari in rendering, but maybe it's just me thinking that.

Is it possible that it could render a page faster than safari if they're using the same rendering engine?

Yes, if you consider internal overhead between Safari and Shiira - since Shiira is relatively new, it has less overhead, which allows it to make more WebKit calls in less time (the WebKit calls themselves run at the same speed regardless of whether Safari, Shiira, or some other WebKit-based browser calls them).

I used to try all new browsers that came out since IE was so slow! Chimera was one of my favorites and I used it for a while.
Then when Safari came out I stooped looking. It may not be the uncontested winner, but Apple updates it regularly, updates are available right from software updates, most websites play well with it, and the speed is great.
But if Safari still has some issues with online banking (and even MacRumors picture uploads), how will this new browser do?

Like most other browsers it's lacking keyboard shortcuts. No CMD-Shift-Arrow to switch tabs and no ESC key to cancel page load, I think I'll stick with Safari.

After trying it, I'm definitely impressed. It's definitely faster than Safari, and the UI is, IMHO, nicer. Not that it doesn't have it's rough edges, but for now (that is, until OmniGroup releases a browser that doesn't suck up all my hard drive space within 2 hours of browsing) it's my default browser.

If you want a nice GUI try the newest version of Camino (0.8), it's really cool.

I'm glad to see there is an alternative browser that uses the same rendering engine as Safari, so I don't have to look at Safari's ugliness. It looks as though they've done the detail work to get the whole package right.

I was just playing around with Shiira when this appeared...

I tried, just out of curiosity, Option-Command-dragging Shiira onto itself, to see if Shiira contained a local directory browser. I got this error message instead.

Yes, English is a funny language, even when it's done right. ;)

If you look in Localizable Strings, there are a few errors that happened.

.92 just came out yesterday and i must say that i'm very impressed. for the most part, it's a clone of safari but adds some very nice features, like the ability to set a user agent string without any debug menu mojo, advanced cache analysis, and custom search engines (it even lets you search the selected one with a context menu when you highlight a word in the page). it works with safari bookmarks right out of the box and once you re-skin it with camino's icons, it looks very very nice. tabs are still kind of ugly and it opens external links in new windows instead of tabs, but when these are fixed, this will become my default browser. the 1.0 roadmap has an rss reader coming in future updates. i can't wait.
