I just picked up my macbook pro. 15" 2.4 ghz with 4 gigs of ram already in the mail. any suggestions on what i should do with it right out of the box. should i condition the battery? run any diagnostics? this is my first laptop (but not my first mac) so im wondering if there are any laptop specific things i should do to ensure that i keep it in good condition.

Yeah, I'd reinstall the OS first. Then you can get rid of the extra trials on there that you won't need (since you likely have mac software). Then you can start importing files from other computers.

Actually - the very first thing you should do is start her up and make certain that everything works in stock / delivered configuration. Then add memory, re-install OS, etc.

    YES!

I'll be getting my MBP in a few weeks and I usually reformat my PC's to get rid of junk. Since I'll be unfimiliar with OSX software, could someone please post which programs can/should be uninstalled?

Or does reinstalling the OS automatically install just the core programs?

I guess what I'm going to do first is:
    1) Check to see if there is anything physically wrong with the machine
    2) Turn it on and check for any weird noises, 1/3 tint, flickering etc...
    3) Reinstall the OS (once I know how)
    4) Tweak things until im satisfied (installing programs, lcd/battery calibration, maybe adding some of those tweaks to make your desktop act/look like leopard etc.)

Wouldnt it be better if you do that all right in the store-instead of going home checking it and maybe something wrong with it and you get mad =\ then back to store-? and you can instantly replace it if anything is wrong..i was thinking of doing that when i get my mbp >_>

and how can you make the OS X tiger look like leopard?? =D

I would if I lived remotely close to an apple store.
I'm in Vancouver, and here in Canada we have a total of 3 stores I believe, all of which are over on the east coast. I ordered mine online... so if I have a problem then I guess I'll have to call apple up and tell them my story.

As for making Tiger look like Leopard...

There's a bunch of little things out there to keep you in your seat until the release. I'm grabbing one right away since one of my buddies can snag a good deal on a copy.
