Shipping Date for New iPad Orders Slips to April 12th, Apple Ends Reservation Program

Yet we shall wait another week.

Maybe this hints for a new MacBook Pro release (at the same time as the iPad, as be visible down in a small window at the site and the iPad in a huge box! ...)

So they want it to be the at the same time released, or something...
(like the iMac 16:9 and the new Unibody white MacBook)

I really can't make any sense of that.anyone care to translate?

Oh. Meanwhile the world outside the USA don't even know how much these things will cost us.
Although I think it's a safe bet that it will be a magical product at an unbelievable price...

suffering in the UK!

over here in the UK we would love to be told that we have to wait for our iPad till the 12th!

I have a bad feeling that the demand may have been greater than Apple had foreseen and that this may lead to a delay in them coming to the UK.

Honestly, I was feeling the same way when the launch slipped then thought about it. This way we get a few weeks where our American friends can beta test the iPad. We get to read through the reviews, see what real people make of it, find out if there's any of the (sadly typical) first generation Apple product issues and let the app store fill up a bit. Oh, and you never know, we might even get a UK iBook app by the time it launces.

Not particularly comforting if you're developing apps for the iPad and only have the simulator to test with though. US developers will get the jump on everyone else, although that's not at-odds with the usual protectionism we see from the states!

I'll be picking up a 3G version as well. I wonder if stores will also carry the 3G versions?

Are the times for 3G being "pushed back" also?

Will the iPad be in stores on April 3rd just to view and have a hands on experiences, but orders not being shipped until April 12 or is EVERYTHING being delayed?:apple:

for new Wi-Fi iPad orders to April 12th from the previous April 3rd date. Orders for Wi-Fi + 3G models continue to show a projected shipping date of late April.

Takes around 12 days to ship containers from China to West Coast. Wonder if delay is until the next "bulk transport" arrives on shore. It is stuck at the 3rd for very long time and then suddenly slides 9 days later. If put a bunch of containers on a boat today/yesterday, it would be around 12th till delivery: deployed to US logistic distribution points (around 8th) and then shipped out to end destinations (12th).

Or have figured out at this point how many iPad to skim from the daily flights from China destined to the retail stores. Once stockpile is big enough can resume online store shipments.

Apple has also removed the iPad reservation program from its site.

Makes sense since folks will be going to store to look at demos. If there is a "wait list" at individual stores folks can sign up there. Otherwise the store folks will have some clue as to when the "next shipment" is.

Who said all the shipments are going on cargo ships?

Since they didn't have an exact date... can't really say they are being pushed back. Can only say haven't been pushed back into May. More likely they'd push back deployment to other countries before pushed back 3G ( unless there were production problems. )

The will be in stores to sell on the 3rd. This issue is that for anyone ordering online now the promise date is the 12th. That could possibly mean that Apple is going to let more units flow into the retail stores. ( although if a "panic stampede" starts that may not work either. )

It seems dubious that Apple didn't know they were running out until just now and then poof, the slide is 9 days. They went 2 weeks and then suddenly ran out, resulting in over a week slide. Just entirely by coincidence this happens exactly a week before the stuff hits the retail stores.

Frankly, anyone who might be wavering once get to store may buy one because think they'll disappear even if there is stock right then. ( there is now doubt there will be stock tomorrow if know online is backordered.). Of course waiting a several weeks will likely get you one.

Because I couldn't decide which "experience" I wanted to have next week, I both pre-ordered a 32GB iPad for delivery and reserved one for in-store pickup. I told myself this would also be a good idea in case something went wrong with my delivery. (Figuring I could look at the tracking info on Friday, or earlier, and know what was up.) Any issue, and I could just head to my local Apple store and then refuse delivery on the shipment on Monday and send that one back.

If FedEx comes through as expected next Saturday, I guess I'll have done someone a favor in-store since there will be an "extra" on hand for someone to buy. In any event, glad I ordered 3/12. :)

Not all shipments. Just perhaps a 40-80K inventory stocking bulk shipment.
It is way more cost effective to ship by cargo ship than by flying by cargo jet. If you know several weeks in advance you need to put many thousands of units in a location, that is most cost effective way to transport them.

If there is limited space on the cargo jets how do you ever catch up if demand is outstripping supply funneled through the jets ? For example, if they thought were going to be splitting the iPads between planes heading for Europe and heading for US you may not be able to turn around and then pump all of that volume just to the US. FedEx (or whoever contractor is) may not have empty space on their planes or extra planes lying around doing nothing ( neither of which is cost effective for FedEx at all. ) So now you have a python trying to swallow a pig kind of a situation. It won't work, because planes don't expand like pythons. Putting the "overflow" into containers and shipping them works and is actually more cost effective ( and greener. ).

As I also said they don't have to do that. Could just incrementally add to jet flights but will take a while (or have to wait a couple of weeks to make a major change to the fraction of jet's load). The days match up though to the transhipment times.

Modbook or similar?

I wish Apple would just get started or have a product that is almost the same or similar as the Modbook. Since I'm a designer, I like the hands on element of the Modbook as it allows the person to draw directly on the screen. I'm just surprised that there aren't any iMacs that are enabled with a touch screen feature like the HP and Dell computers they have on the market with that feature. Even though I'm waiting on the new MacBook Pro... (hopefully in the near future! gosh!), I'll keep hoping for this kind of tablet device that will allow one to write, draw, and other things innovative. :)

Modbooks have been out for years. Nobody wants them.

Touchscreen with full OS = fail

He was talking about Adobe Flash.

Ah, yikes. That's why noobs should lurk moar.

Thanks for speaking for everyone, but nobody asked you.

Hah, I really can't believe Apple are about to launch a "Pad" with no thought put into being able to draw on it. That Brushes keynote presentation was a joke; I haven't finger-painted in 20 years - release a pressure stylus, then we'll talk.

They really missed a trick there, especially if the touch panel is as responsive and accurate as they make out.

Have you taken the time to check out any of the galleries done with what is available NOW?

They rock.

I wish i could finger-paint that well....

I was going to say for all the people complaining about how the iPad sucks, (I believe it is better than a netbook..) have you seen the ModBook?

Thanks for speaking for everyone, but nobody asked you.

It's simply a statistical fact. Rounded to the nearest percent, 0% of Apple OS customers purchase a ModBook.

If you want to go into the mod-book business because you think the business will expand a lot and become more profitable, be my guest.
