Mobile graphics card in a nearly $3k desktop computer...iMacs always make me LOL. New trend at Apple: looks over function, a contradiction to industrial design.

I know, it's pathetic. Makes sense for a cheap AIO, but no AIO should be over $1200 - that is a stupid way to spend money on a fused computer and monitor.

----------

I like the iMac but I wish the screen really was flat from the side view without looking pregnant and the base had easy access to the memory and drive with a door, no soldering, and no tools required. It would be something like a small Mac Mini but integrated with the monitor so you don't see any wires. And you can upgrade the Mac by replacing this entire base without having to replace the monitor by just sliding it out of the integrated dock. That would be a really nice Mac that only Apple can do.

Agree completely. There is potential for the iMac, but currently it's an abomination.

----------

A fusion drive is just as shocking

It's only $2500. What do you expect, full solid state storage?

Oh and when that HDD fails due to excessive heat, it's easy to replace. Just buy a few hundred dollars of tools and set aside a weekend to replace it. Or you can lug the thing to the mall and pay some "genius" an insanely inflated price to swap in a new drive - it only takes them a few days!

----------

I was in the Apple store this week and compared a regular 27" iMac sitting next to a Retina iMac. I could tell a difference...but only when I looked really close. It was not the stunning difference I had thought it would be. You might want to see for yourself before taking out your wallet. Unless you're a photo professional, you might not find it worth the extra money.

You need to see an optometrist, dude.

Really tempted to buy the 5K imac, so went to the apple store to play around with it... Sure enough, beautiful resolution BUT COULD NOT STAND THE EXTREME GLARE AND REFLECTIONS!!!! It was like a mirror! Mac pro is out of the question, so either a high end mbp 15" or a hackintosh connected to an external 4K display would be the nest best option? What you guys think?

I just keep telling myself "Skylake, Skylake, Skylake!" when I feel the temptation to press the buy button. From the reviews I've seen, this thing is a little bit jittery running at this high resolution. I bought a first gen Retina MacBook Pro and it did the same thing. It's just not ideal to buy first gen retina devices, like the iPad 3. The only one that was decent was the iPhone 4. Totally getting it whenever Skylake drops, either next autumn or spring 2016. Hopefully by then 1TB SSDs will be cheaper too.

I think some of the stuttering will be fixed in subsequent software updates to Yosmite. It was the same with Mountain Lion and the first rMBP's.

I hear you about Skylake though. Apparently it won't be delayed. So by next year at this time Skylake should be out.

I'm waiting for Skylake for the next significant rev of Thunderbolt. Skylake will make a Retina ACD a realistic option. Right now not even the nMP can drive 5K, at least not with one TB port.

The stuttering is due to the GPU throttling. It throttles because it's insufficiently cooled. Could software fix it? Maybe if the GPU were run hotter, or if fans were more aggressively spooled up.

If I bought this RiMac, I'd configure it with ONLY SSD storage inside. Removing the HDD will drop internal temps significantly and no HDD belongs in an inaccessable space anyways. There might even be a way to add a fan in the HDD space to aid in cooling, but that's another discussion ;)

I take it that is your first iMac? They take some getting used to. I've had a 21.5" since 2009 and remember agonizing over whether or not to get a glazed cover when I was deciding whether or not to buy it. It became a non-issue with me after a short while. Buy the iMac and enjoy it!

I saw one at the store playinga 1080 YouTube video. It was stuttering very badly. I didn't take the time to double check whether the video was buffered but it made me wonder about the graphics capability.

Does it perform? If the answers is "yes," then it doesn't matter what the graphics card is, because the function is there. I don't own one, but those that do say it performs fine.

Meh, Apple forgot to offer one of these to blow it while you're using it.

Image

Yeah, it's too thin so it overheats. Ive dared to fail again.

I want that fan!

As for too thin and will over heat, Well I've had my late 2012 for almost 2 years, it's going through its 3rd summer now and had no signs of getting too hot and I live in sunny QLD Australia.

The retina might make things different but will it be enough to make it fail?

And BTW I ordered my iMac in store the day after it was released, took over a month to get it. But it was well worth the wait.

What's "mobile" graphics? What you refer to as "mobile" graphics, is just a graphics chip. Apple's definition of a graphics chip needs to draw less power, and it needs to be cooled with minimal (if any) moving parts, and it needs to perform well enough to do the things you need it to do in your product. Other OEMs don't share this philosophy.

Don't get caught up in all the man-made terminology.. "mobile cpu", "mobile graphics" are just legacy man-made terms from the past decade. Nothing about the chip makes it inherently "mobile".

What it really means is that the GPU has a more power-efficient design at the cost of peak performance. Performance is NOT everything. Otherwise, everyone would put Jet engines in their road cars. A product is a sum of all the parts working together harmoniously.

Disclaimer: I have a $4k version of this computer the OP is talking about and almost everything launches/loads instantaneously and the performance is delightful. What's sad is when you look at the Retina display, you CAN conceive of improving it. We need an 8K or 10K display to truly make my eyes think i'm looking through a window into the real world. But this retina iMac is the closest anyone has gotten to achieving that.

My screen went out on me (purple lines everywhere) and my mouse and keyboard kept disconnecting after sleep. Had to send it back to exchange it for another one. I guess I'm the lucky one!

Lots of people have had issues with the mouse after waking up from sleep. All I can say is don't use the mouse or keyboard to wake up the iMac, use the power button...

i REALLY want one of these,

but

underpowered GPU for that resolution of screen (an apple norm) and sealed screen so i cant replace/upgrade/maintain the hard disk myself going forward mean i am stuck building a PC to do the job, because no way am i going near a system i can't replace the parts that fail MOST OFTEN on all computers myself in 2 minutes.

You get used to it. Besides, it's not as bad as they once were.

The M295X is as powerful as a desktop GTX 770 - not the mobile version. Quit your whining, it's a miracle they stuffed an i7-4790K and an M295X into a machine this small.

And the $3K is justified - an inferior version of the display alone costs $2500 from Dell's UltraSharp professional display division.

I have a gaming PC with a GTX 760. I was hanging on to it until I got my Retina iMac. I put Boot Camp on, loaded Steam and a few of my games that have benchmarks in them and ran the benchmarks with identical settings.

My gaming PC is up for sale now.

What in the world would he have to fix. Everything is soldered.

Oh.

Wait.

Sorry.

Why do you even post here? Sounds like you have no interest in Apple beyond making snarky comments about products you'll never buy.

Angry birds HD edition and home-made videos of pet cat? Why don't you do some research on what actually R9 M295X is. Just the concept of a mobile graphics card pushing that many pixels is pathetic. Those crappy cards were a joke before retina iMacs, now it's a full on circus.
And Apple does it because they can. People will still buy those pretty looking iMacs with out-of-date components.

A Ferrari with a Prius engine - at least it moves. Whatever floats your boat.

You've obviously never read a single review about the retina iMac. Which makes sense, seeing as you were probably never going to buy it anyways. There was absolutely no reason for you to include something as asinine as "Angry birds HD edition and home-made videos of pet cat".

To be clear, I understand that the M295X is a mobile graphics card. But the machine is a first gen machine that seems to be performing reasonably well for those that have chosen to purchase it. It's really not the end of the world, and I'm pretty sure people that want to squeeze the most power they can out of their machines weren't in the market for an iMac in the first place.

Everyone is comparing the price of the 5K iMac to a single Dell 5K monitor, like somehow, Dell is the standard on pricing. I guess if Dell priced their monitor at $10000, the iMac would be a tremendous value? Or, if Dell priced it at $1500, would the iMac still be a good value? Anyone want to venture a guess as to the cost to manufacture a 5K panel? Anyone think that Dell's price is about 500% what it could be?

Not to mention the fact that i'd bet anything Apple is making their requisite 50% profit margin on these, so YES, there is margin to put in a better graphics chip and a SSD and STILL charge $2499. Does Apple really need to make 50% profit on everything?

The point is, the hardware is underwhelming. In a few years, when 5K displays are $700, and processors are leaps ahead what the lowly i5 is now, everyone will be 2nd guessing their decision to buy this 1st gen retina iMac.

ANY computer can be second-guessed in a few years. DDR4, DisplayPort 1.3, OLED, SkyLake, etc; why does my computer not have these things? Might as well enjoy being one of the first to use 5K now

And yet it seems demand is outstripping supply. They're not so dumb over there I guess.
