Here is an interesting question. If I was to import the iphone to the UK from the US, and there is something wrong with it once the iphone has been released here, will I be able to get it repaired in the usual way?

Well how would import it? Via the online Apple Store US; I doubt they'd ship an iPhone to a UK address. You mean like friend sends it you? Well, a warranty is a warranty. If you unlocked it they could refuse warranty service on it, just like if you had installed a new hard drive in a Mac laptop back in the days when you weren't allowed to install your own hard drives in laptops. Alteration that voids your warranty. But assuming you didn't unlock it, or could restore to its original unlocked state, I would say you'd have to ship it back to your friend in the States and get him to take it in.
Now if it were after 9th November, it was locked or relocked and you were on an O2 iPhone tariff, I'm sure the serial number will indicate it was sold in the States, but you might be able to take it into, say, the Regent Street store and they might overlook where it was sold. But it's kind of anybody's guess and would probably depend on the shop agent and/or manager there at the time.
