How does a purchase qualify for free shipping at the online apple store? I could've sworn I saw somewhere where it said $50+ total purchase for free shipping. But I can't find shipping info on the site.

Free shipping for purchases over $50 is correct. Here is the page outlining Apple's shipping policies. You may have to log in with your apple id to access it.
