I placed my order on the 18th and my order for a 32 GB model changed to Prepared for Shipment on Friday or Saturday. On the 26th, I went to Apple Store at Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga (SoCal), and put in a reservation. As luck would have it, I dropped and cracked my screen on my 16 GB 3G.
I got an e-mail yesterday saying that it was available for pick up. I went to the store and was told I had to pay the full, unsubsidized price of $699, plus tax. Apparently my online order changing to prepared for shipment took away my upgrade eligibility, even though it had not yet shipped. A call to online store support indicated that I couldn't cancel my previous order and even if I did, my upgrade eligibility would take 3 days to switch back. I asked the guys in the store if I could refund the one that was shipping and get the price I paid for the unsubsidized phone back. That wasn't possible. I asked them if I could return the one I was picking up without a restocking fee after I got the new one and they said I could.
I bought the phone and Mobile Me ($30 discount with purchase of major hardware) and my total out the door was a tad under $830. It's kind of silly that I have to open up a new box and my current one has to go through their return process, but it is what it is. If I hadn't cracked the screen on my 3G, I might have just waited it out. Since I was purchasing the phone for the full, non-contract price, I had to take it over to the AT&T store to activate it. They Apple guys said they couldn't do it.
While I was in the store, I took in my MacBook Pro to have them look at why the battery cover was not sitting flush. Apparently their genius bar was busy and the next available appointment was Saturday. The guy I was dealing with was nice, however, and took my MBP into the back to have someone take a look. He came back and told me that the battery had a bulge in it. I asked him if we could swap out a battery to test the theory, but he said they didn't have any lying around for that. He talked to some people and eventually grabbed a new battery off the shelf and we swapped them out and it resolved my issue. I had been having poor battery performance with the old battery, so I'm happy to have swapped it for a new one. With it bulging the way it was, it could have been a disaster waiting to happen.
I dealt with two guys at the Apple Store and they were very nice and accommodating. Oh, they had bumpers in a variety of different colors in stock. I passed on it, but might pick one up after I get my online order.
