I guess when a whopping ten people downloaded the app Katz finally got the hint.
Real question now is who is going to end up with all that content?
And where’s that Btrach person that was going around downvoting all the critical comments while gushing about how great the service was on the Quibi post yesterday? I’d love to hear their thoughts on this latest development.

Now that they’re shutting down, I hope the clippers documentary (blackballed) will be made available to watch on another streaming service. That’s their only content that I’d be interested in watching.

This launched 8-10 years too late in my opinion. If it had come around in the same era as IG and SC, perhaps it could have gained more steam. As it stands, we're already well past "peak smartphone"... I think it's just too late in the game to launch something this platform-specific as a startup.

The smart content providers probably insisted the rights revert upon service shutdown, worst case they would have to wait out the two-year exclusivity.

I wouldn’t 🤣

Think of all of the brilliant, life-changing business ventures or charitable projects that could have used $1.75 Billion in fundraising this year. And instead, it was wasted on a stupid short-form video platform that no one asked for and no one needed.

Out of all the surprised Pikachu pics out there. You went with the lowest quality one available. Outstanding.

So sad. I was fully expecting this format to revolutionize the entertainment industry... kinda like how the Segway revolutionized urban transportation. 😏

Someone will buy these shows and stitch them together and call it a day. I've seen a few and they were...OK. Dummy and Street Lights were pretty good for an hour-ish binge.

It was a dumb idea from the start. Their shows were at least 5 times as long as the average consumer's attention span these days. When someone wants to waste time on the checkout line, they don't watch some serial drama, they watch TikTok videos.

I wonder why they even bothered to release the Apple TV app yesterday

Why launch the Apple TV App yesterday ?

I suspect a majority of the company, especially people focused on day-to-day operations, product delivery, etc., were unaware of the specific shutdown date (even if they understood, things weren't great). So just conducting business-as-usual, heck, I worked with a company in Silicon Valley, AR space, blew through tons of funding, and right up until they said, "The offices will be closed, indefinitely, starting tomorrow", people were still writing code, testing, etc.

Wow. This is certainly... something.

I signed up at launch, as they were giving away a free trial. I don't know how long the trial was. 3 months? 6 months? I just know there was NOTHING that caught my interest. I literally didn't watch a single video during the entire free trial.

AFTER the trial was over, they started showing commercials for some interesting-looking shows. It got me kinda interested in it.

With the launch of the Apple TV app and a growing collection of films, I figured that NOW was a good time to sign up again.

I guess not.

I doubt the pandemic hurt them. In the initial weeks of corona, people were "locked" down and wanted new stuff to watch and toilet paper. If anything, it should have made demand higher. There was nothing else to do. It was an interesting concept, but I never watched even one second of it, minus whatever was on TV ads.

Not gonna lie. When they renewed some of their shows a few months ago I was having a laugh. I feel bad for those employees though

Tried it on three of their shows but failed to see the creativity of this like yes ... writing like the episode title was centered both ways but when you decided to watch something in portrait mode, it focused on one person and it cut out a lot. As a creative person, I would have been offended. Also I failed to see the difference of doing that on any video in any app and just zooming 🤷🏽‍♂️ You loose content no matter what
This particular series would show the facetime he was in, or his texts, lockscreen, video recording from his iphone, etc. It wasn't just the same video in portrait.

I first heard about Quibi last year on the Techmeme Ride Home podcast. I remember telling me wife "I wish these companies would save themselves billions and pay me a $1M consulting fee instead so I can explain to them how stupid this idea is and how it will never work."

But honestly, how many people are surprised by this? I'm convinced that the whole thing was a scheme to either swindle some billionaire investors or some kind of money laundering scheme for the billionaires.
