I have been wearing the long Sports band since receiving my Apple Watch and find the third hole a bit too tight and the fourth hole a bit too loose.

I haven't gotten around to trying out the short band yet, but I have a question to those who have already experimented with both bands:

Is there a designed-in variation in the hole spacing between the long and short bands?

In effect - - is the "third" hole on the short band equivalent to 3.5 holes on the long band?

(It just seems like the kind of thing Jonny Ive would think about and implement.)

Why not lay them side-by-side and see? The watch comes with both and should be easy to visually see.

You are correct - - that is the solution to this problem. :)

(However, as I mentioned above I haven't gotten around to it... because the extra band is stored in the box which is stored in the box cupboard which is a PITA to get to... so I thought I would check with the hivemind first, since it is clear that some MacRumors members have put an extraordinary amount of attention into just such small details.)

Yes, laying them on top of each other (which makes it easier to see the difference than side by side) does show that the holes are in different places on each band.

However, for me at least, it doesn't seem like it really makes much of a difference in the sizing. What I discovered is that with the small band I'm on the 2nd to the last hole, so only a tiny bit of the band tail gets tucked in. With the large band much more tail gets tucked in, so even though the hole position means that the band is slightly looser, by the time I tuck in the larger tail it's almost exactly the same as with the smaller band.

If you're on the 3rd/4th hole of the larger Sport band, the small one probably won't fit.

I flutter between the 2nd and 3rd hole on the M/L band, but only the very last hole on the S/M one fits. I'm not sure about the spacing of the holes, but you could always lay them side by side and see as other posters have recommended.

Same experience here. I currently wear the small band where only the end is tucked, but it's a little looser than I'd like (and the next hole down is a little tighter than I'd like). Tried to swap to the large band to see if it'd fit me better but it ended up feeling about the same.

i don't have my 42mm yet but when i went to the try on at the apple store i was on the 3rd hole on the m/l band. It seemed a little tight for my taste so when mine shows up ill experiment with the 2nd and 2rd holes. I personally do not need to use the HR monitor all the time so i can go a little loose.

If it’s too loose then in addition to the heart rate monitor not working it also won’t be able to detect that it’s on your wrist and it will keep asking for you passcode.

That said, though, it definitely doesn’t need to be very tight. Mine is a bit looser than I’d prefer and it still has no problems with heart rate or wrist detection.

It looks like I'm just going to have to design a third-party matching band with just the holes offset by half a space.

I'm going to be a millionaire!
