Shortcut for bring up spotlight search screen?

What is the trick to using the shortcut to bring up the spotlight search screen? I swipe from the top left down across the screen and it worked once. Every other time it brings down the notifications panel. How do you do this?

Simply swipe down from almost anywhere on the home screen except from the very top (so for example the middle of the screen).
