One of my favorite features of Snow Leopard was the gesture for quickly accessing the desktop (similar to Hide All). I believe it was four finger swipe down.

However, in Lion it seems this is no longer a possibility. There is no gesture for quickly accessing the desktop. So far, my workaround is making one of the "spaces" in Mission Control an empty desktop. This seems like a stupid exclusion on Apples behalf, as this was by far the gesture most commonly used in my day-to-day work...

Am I just not able to find this gesture shortcut or is truly gone???

(On another note, I'm really confused by the numerous ways in which you can get from one program to another. I really hope that this feeling will disappear as I get more familiar with the in and outs of Lion...)

Spread with thumb and fingers on a trackpad.

This works for me:

pinch out with five fingers, as if you're opening all of your fingers to push everything away.

ok, thanks...

This feels a bit weird to do. I think I have to cut my finger nails to pull that off properly...

However, it doesn't work while I'm in full-screen mode in Safari. That seems strange...

Or simply push 4 fingers up.

The point is that this no longer woks with Lion unless you install an application such as BetterTouchTool.

When in full-screen mode, there is pretty much only one window and that occupies it's own space. Instead of that just simply swipe left with 4 fingers until you reach your desktop.

I think this will keep me away form using full-screen mode, as I find swiping and swiping until I find my desktop quite tiresome...

And a note - there is no difference between swiping with three or four fingers... it is the same gesture...

I guess you mean swipe up with three fingers....:) Still, tiresome and requires that I have added an empty space / desktop.

Well, the preferences give you an option to use either three or four. I guess most people prefer to set it up as four because you can then repurpose the three finger swipes for other actions.
