Shortcuts in MacOS 27

This is one of my new favourites. I take screenshots regularly and with the new automation triggers I can name my screenshot before saving it (or just accepting a default which I create from the relevant app name and date).

One can also click cancel and have it left only in the clipboard.



Note that you need to use the keyboard combo for just copying the image to the clipboard, not saving it, else you'll end up with two copies. I swapped my keyboard shortcuts around to save me retraining my muscle memory.

Oh, I love this! This new trigger is available in iOS/iPadOS too. I like to put my screenshots into albums organized by apps (i.e. all screenshots taken in Safari go into a Safari album, all screenshots taken in the Amazon app go into an Amazon album, etc.)

I had built some automations on my iPhone to do this, but this new "When I save a screenshot" trigger will make things soooo much easier!

My current setup (on the iPhone) is something like this:

• When app is opened
  • Write time and app name to a file.
• When app is closed
  • Read file to get time app was opened.
  • Query my library to see if new screenshots have been added after that time.
  • If yes, add them to the album based on the app name written to the file.

I needed to duplicate these two automations for each app I cared about. It wasn't perfect and there were some quirks, but it worked fine for the most part.

Now I can just do it all with one simple automation:

• When I save a screenshot
  • Get name of open app
  • Add screenshot to album

And what's new on this? These shortcuts exist since version 10.0?

Mainly, automations and shortcuts are merged. If you look at my screenshot, the change is (or should be!) obvious. This is a great change with many advantages over the "old" way of doing things.

Plus, the new "ask Siri to create one" option. Plus the new triggers.

So, shortcuts have existed for a while, but not "these" shortcuts. iOS/MacOS 27 has really improved things, although if you're not expecting the change, the shock of having all the automations turned into oddly-named shortcuts (you can rename them) is confusing at first.
