Part of me thinks Apple should keep the classic design around. The design that started it all. As long as the bulk of their phone line up is moving forward design-wise then why not release something yearly like the SE with the forehead and chin/touch ID ? That design is so iconic imo.

What do you think ? Keep the design around or retire it ?

Its not about the design, but where to place the sensors, especially for Face ID.

I think they can minimise it by putting the earpiece between the bezels, but the notch is here to stay if Face ID is still available.

Personally I don't mind it much because mostly we're looking at the middle part of the screen.

What's the point of keeping that old style if there are other options that provide a more expansive display? Wether that be the current notched style, new iPad Air w/ TouchID style, etc.

The cost for manufacturing the new SE must be low enough to make it "worth" manufacturing, but at some point the more modern designs will reach that threshold.

I love the classic bezel iphones. We should at least get the Iphone SE in the lineup until 2022. After this sadly i dont think we will see Apple release another iphone with the classic design, but i hope im wrong. Hopefully we might get a hybrid though, like the Iphone SE with minimal bezel to house the front camera and then power button touch id aka the Iphone SE 3. If my iphone 12 mini stopped working, i would have no qualms at all to go back to using anyone of my 3 classic iphones, with the Iphone SE 2020 being my preference as being more compact than my 6s+/8+, but they are also great to use.

I hear what you're saying, but you're just being nostalgic and Apple rarely holds on to the past.
I mean why not have MacBook Pros with a trackball then? :)

I think that they will - at least for the next year or so whilst the original Face ID array is too expensive.

Similar to the original SE, I don't think that Apple are wedded to the iPhone 6 design - it just enables them to hit a certain price point with their desired profit margin.

In 2022 I can see them bringing out a 'SE3' iPhone that is similar to the iPad Air (replacing the current SE, XR and 11)

I.e. with the:
  • Body of the 12/Air (apparently the raised/curved edges glass screens of the 6/X era are more prone to breaking than the recessed glass of the 12).
  • And with an LCD screen and Touch ID in the sleep button i.e. no FaceID array.

Lol true but the phone design is much more iconic. Over a billion people had one.

The clickwheel on the iPod is iconic and they retired that!

Nothing wrong with the Touch ID + forehead combo. I just don't see a reason for it to stick around like you're proposing.

No.
Nostalgia can be easily satisfied by simply looking at the pictures of the devices. I'm sure Apple will release a revision of the "Designed by Apple in California" picture book.

Apple kept the iPhone 6 design for the 2020 SE simply because it is cheaper for them, the same why they used the 5 design for the old SE. Apple ditched the iPhone 5 design/size, so the iPhone 6 design is next. FaceID (and probably TouchID on power button) will be the way forward.

Some people like that design, as they’re entitled to do, but enough to persuade Apple to persist with it? I dunno. I like the current and now classic iMac design but I fully expect Apple to dump it.
