I love the backlit keyboard on my MBP and continually find myself missing it when I am using my desktop. I often use my computer in dim or dark rooms and struggle to use their current offerings in these conditions.

I believe that Apple would sell a lot of desktop keyboards with this feature. What do you think?

I agree Back-lit keyboards are better, however i don't think Apple will sell them. Hopefully they will prove me wrong. I think Logictec sells a backlit keybaords, but I don't think they look that appealing.

I hardly ever use my iMac with the lights off, so for me, I probably wouldn't buy a backlit keyboard.

A wireless bluetooth backlit keyboard would use up batteries too fast. Unless apple of course creates a rechargeable version or a wired version which apple is trying to get away from. Expect the price to be much higher then. Kinda too much IMO.

Apple Wireless Keyboard supposedly lasts 10 months with a set of batteries. I wouldn't mind having to change the batteries every 6 or 7 months, or adding an extra fourth battery.

you should have a light on anyways

look after your eyes

My eyes actually hurt more when the light is on in the room.

Add a light behind you. Looking at the light from the monitor only causes excessive eye strain. If this is a problem, you might want to get your eyes checked and ask your optometrist for a solution.

You may want to set that light a little to the side as well, especially if you have one of the newer glossy iMacs. Otherwise, you may find the glare from the direct reflection a bit disconcerting.

I agree; that would be a great addition to a keyboard.

However, I figure that would increase the price of the keyboard thus making it far too expensive.

Would be cool - I'm also waiting ofr such a feature...

...but Apple will not do that due the battry issue.

You could always plug in a small lamp. Not something you can do on a laptop.

there's three threads - plus the one I posted in excess (sorry) - about this, and this is the most educated response from, err, "no-backlighters" I've seen so far.

what I don't understand is why people get so pissed off because someone wants a backlit wireless keyboard and they don't. in the near future (hopefully), when you're setting up a new mac, just choose the keyboard without backlight. it'll even come cheaper.

btw, @flopticalcube if I wanted messy wires all over the place I'd be running Windows... or Linux. I love Apple's sleek design ;] which is why I don't want a lamp.

Apple wireless keyboards now need only two batteries - so I think that won't be such a problem.

my guess is that it's going to be released sometime in the future, because of this thing called planned obsolescence. you know, the same reason iPads didn't have cameras and all.

Apple should just stick with backlit keyboards on laptops, desktop users should have some sort of lighting. Why they took away the backlit keyboard on the new air confuses me. Hopefully we dont see a similar thing happening to the MBP.

Second the wireless keyboard with num pad!

For the backlit keyboard, battery wouldn't be an issue at all. LEDs use so little power. I doubt battery is what's keeping it from the market.

On another note, I don't think I've looked at my keyboard the last 5 years.. the only buttons I might struggle to find in a dark setting is the play/pause button, F8..
