The Verge is reporting that Amazon entered into a deal with Best Buy where Best Buy will sell smart TVs that run Amazon’s FireTV software. I recently bought a 4K smart TV that has Roku integration and I’ve hardly used my Apple TV since. I used to think an Apple television was a silly idea but I don’t anymore. Not when most new TVs come with Google, Amazon or Roku software. Why spend an additional $199 for a box when the Roku Netflix app is basically the same and just one tap away on my remote? Heck Apple could even partner with Best Buy, Frys or other retailers to sell the TVs in store. I know people say TVs are low margin and not replaced often (opposite of an iPhone) but I fear Apple is ceding too much ground to other players in this space.

Best Buy will be sorry...Amazon Fire is the most flawed product made in over 50 years....they need to rename it: Always a problem.

The article, it seems to suggest the lower end of the TV market and an attempt to lock people into an OS eco system. A grab for customers.

Would Apple need to do this?

Perhaps there could be an Apple app?

Wouldn't think of an Apple-only TV..

It would be only suited to the iTunes Store, if it did.. If Apple didn't want to allow content providers.. Besides, that would tie in with their own original programming that that would be thinking up.

Could be something, but i think the direction if more, let uses be the 'judge' with apps. They are making more money that way

I believe the argument is been long over. People in the know prefer to buy a "dumb" TV and add the smarts as needed.

Apple business model is to lock you into their eco-system. I have noticed lately with the updates that they are pushing this, "Start Playing on device 1" then seamlessly "move to device #2 and continue," and they can do that without having to sell you their own TV.

If you currently can do everything in Rokus/Amazon and don't need/want any of the Apple's features then fine, live happy with your purchase, but someday, somehow, there is a feature on the Apple eco-system that will pull you in and at that time, they got you.

I think the best thing for them to do would be to put their OS on some TV's BUT still sell the Apple TV separately for people without this TV. Sorta how Amazon, Google, and even Roku do it.
