Even though I prefer no fan, it also makes me a bit nervous longg term because we all know that heat is the #1 factor for deaths in any electronics. Im fine with it in something like the ipad but the Macbook gets WAAAY hotter than any ipad would. 100F even in a short period of time makes me nervous inside. When I got my Air I didnt think this would be an issue but now it's making me second guess if this is a smart decision.

Im picking up a M4 Pro in a couple hours. Going to see which I prefer long term. This is going to be very tough. Each have its pros and cons.
You’re nervous because you don’t understand modern silicon.

The air will die of various other issues long before the chip’s heat will cause any problems. ALL CPU’s have heat management practices (throttling), this isn’t a concern for an end user.

I see what you're saying but the Air and Pro are two completely different class laptops. What I was suggesting is, Apple should come out with a fan and vent design M4 Air so it performs the same as the Pro but with the form factor of the Air. Because we all know the Air has by far the better and sleeker form factor over the Pro.
For the M4 generation, the difference between the M4 and M4 Pro is really the differentiating factor between Apple's low end and Apple's higher end. I suspect the M4 MBP is going to be more-or-less a more thermal friendly M4 MBA.

If it was Best Buy, they probably used it for a soccer ball in the back room. Those retail store employees can get a bit crazy on break 😂

Maybe the battery gets tested at the factory?

I'm not impressed. I was going to exchange it for having a defective box but I didn't.

You didn’t notice it in the store? If you ever worked retail you would be horrified with how stuff gets treated

I noticed it as I was walking out the store. I've seen worse though. If the corners or box was heavily dented then I would have exchanged it but scuffs isn't as bad.

This. Apple seems to segment on thermals at this point.

I think I got lucky but there doesn't seem to be any fans in my M4 Pro. I put my ear next to it while pushing it with a heavy video render and no fans.

You may not be pushing it hard at all if it’s using the encoder engines instead of the CPU/GPU.

What format?

Yes that is me. And I already have a couple more issues with the new 15 minute old M4 Pro I just picked up at Best Buy. First the box had scuffs on the outside. Not sure if it was thrown around the truck or not. And I checked the cycle count and it has 3. How does a brand new MacBook have any cycle counts if its never been used? Hmmm

The box is packaging intended to protect the machine inside. It did its job.

My brand new Max had 2 cycles - direct from apple factory in china as a custom spec build via courier. QA testing?

Im sorry but that’s not honestly a serious proposal is it? Power means heat, more power means more heat.
More heat means active cooling, active cooling means less room for power or more room over all.
So it’s a thin thing with power or a thicker thing with more power.
Also, you know Apple. The P in Power stands for Pro and deeper Pockets.

On my three week old M4 Pro I already have a cycle count of 8. Hmmm.

A charge cycle happens when you use all of the battery’s power—but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge.

For example, you could use half of your notebook’s charge in one day, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two. In this way, it might take several days to complete a cycle.
Don't put too much stock in the cycle count.

If you are unhappy with the box, and the cycle count, return the device and get another.

Feel the air from the vents at the back of the machine. If there is warm air coming out the fans are working.

In spite of reviewers with an agenda, the fans on my M4 Pro are very quiet. I have to place the machine close to my ears to hear the fans. All moving air produced by a mechanical device will generate noise. I think the reviewers were "guessing" based on past experience and really did not listen to the fans. The one reviewer that had significant noise had a defective unit and the replacement was very quiet.

The fans probably get loud during reviews because idiot reviewers are explicitly turning on HIGH POWER MODE.

What do they expect? High power mode is "run flat out, give me everything you got!" mode. Of course the fans will ramp up!

I maxed the CPU on my M4 Pro for 5 minutes, in high power mode, connected to wall power. I had to turn off the building air handler to hear the fans. Ambient noise was more than the fan noise. Unless I held the MacBook up next to my ears. Yes, moving air will make noise. The sound is less than my Intel desktop makes with the two water cooler fans, the three case fans, and the power supply fan.

The reviewers have an agenda. They have to find something negative. If their biggest complaint is fan noise, turn off their heating and cooling system as those will also make noise.

My m4 max is different. I can hear them, but they aren't super loud. No louder than the DELL laptop I have on my desk that's sitting mostly idle doing whatever random background crap windows 11 has it working on.

I was pushing it pretty good. The laptop got pretty warm and I blew a fan over it after for 5mins to cool it down.

I find if you take a cookie sheet for cooking, put it in the freezer and fill it with water, it forms a sheet of ice I can put my MBP on to keep it cool. Plus as the ice melts you can use a cloth diaper to dab at the keyboard and screen to keep them clean. Works great!

It’s not a luck thing - the Pro is manufactured with fans in it. It has them.

One thing I enjoy is setting up a spot in the snow in my backyard. I keep my MacBook just air gapped from the snow. Works a dream to keep the thing cool.

A battery coming with one to five cycles on it is completely normal and there are tons of reports of it.
My day one 15 Pro Max had two cycles I believe.
The battery says it was manufactured two months before I purchased the phone.
Could’ve been calibration at the factory, but we also know that Apple has internal devices to update the software of phones while they are still in boxes, it’s possible they could charge them as well.
Also every Apple product I’ve ever purchased new has always come with a battery around 70-80%.

Put it in diagnostics mode, you should definitely hear them spin at full blast for a couple seconds.
