Should backup include *.ipsw ?

What I did was sync. - did not see a 'backup' option.
[iPad 3G, iOS3.2, Mac OSX iTunes 9.2]

It seems to have created a backup folder but I find no *.ipsw file there. Thought the IPSW was needed to restore.
