A silver band is the way to go. I've got a silver band on my watch and it looks great with dress and casual attire.

Personally, I'll be upgrading from my current watch in a couple of years to an Omega. I'm only 23 and really have no need for an expensive brand at this point in my life. I've had the same Guess watch since junior year of high school and it's worked beautifully.

I like a silver band as well, but I can't really wear metal bands. I seem to have odd body chemistry that doesn't react well with most metals. Because of that, my watches have leather bands or something similar. Plus, those metal bands tend to be painful to arm hair. The only drawback is I have to replace the leather bands every so often.

i would guess that the right $5000 watch is a better investment than ANY $3000 pair of sunglasses.

Based on what? The $3,000 glasses were made with material that would put most $5,000 watches to shame.

It all depends on what your into you might not see the value in expensive hand bags but that doesn't stop Louis Vuitton from selling them for thousands of dollars nor has it stopped customers from buying them at these prices. If the subject matter isn't within your knowledge range I don't see how you can judge whether it's a good investment.

I prefer unique to flashy, so I have a Stowa Antea Kleine Sekunde (~$500). I wouldn't want to spend big bucks on a watch, just to go to happy hour and see 4 dudes wearing variations of the same thing.

(not my pic, mine is currently on a black croc strap)

That is a beautiful watch.

I am trying to imagine expensive Swiss precision hinges on those glasses that rival the guts on the watch

I want to see these $3,000 sunglasses...

When I got my last set of eye prescription, I decided to get sunglasses also. Regular Burberry's for inside and night use and Ray Ban's for outside. Set me back a cool $600 and I thought damn this is high...

If you're not a watch guy then don't spend a lot of money on one since you won't appreciate it.

I've always been a watch person, but initially I couldn't imagine spending that kind of money until I bought my first Rolex which was the Submariner LV. After that initial purchase, things became easier. I'm currently wearing a platinum yacht-master that MSRPs for $11k USD. Crazy isn't it?

My advice is don't buy a watch to impress people because 99% of people won't know or care what you are wearing. Find a watch that smiles at you and get that at a discount. I've only paid full price for hard to get time pieces.

People will say why buy a watch when you can look at your cell phone for the time. Those people won't get it. A time piece isn't about just telling time, it's part of a fashion statement. It is jewelry and that's part of the high cost.

A $20 quartz watch will tell better time, but it's not going to hold it's value. And keep in mind that time pieces are great to pass on if you have children.

So goto the authorized dealers and try a few on and buy what you like. And please don't buy a Rolex just so you can say that you have one. Buy it if it smiles at you and that you can appreciate the history and quality behind the name.

I wouldn't call myself a 'watch guy', but I do have a Breitling Aerospace and an Omega Seamaster.

The watch I wear most often at the moment though is a cheap Casio digital!

I bought the Breitling as it was the watch that ticked all the boxes for me at the time. It's super-light (titanium), the glass is anti reflective sapphire (it freaks me out, because it looks like there's no glass there - and it hasn't scratched in 10 years). It has an alarm, multi times, digital. It did everything I wanted and I probably wore it constantly to work for 6 or 7 years. Not a collector's watch though - quartz watches never are.

I bought the Omega because I just liked it's simplicity. It's fantastically solid - and doesn't look too dressy.

I don't really like to look ostentatious, but like having a decent watch so that if I'm 'dressing down' I can still go to a good restaurant or bar without feeling like a bum. I also think that if you're actually going to wear a watch for years, the expense isn't that much. Over the time I've had my Breitling, it's cost less than a cup of coffee every week - and it's lasted well.

I'd go for a decent watch if I were you. Of the 'moderate priced' watches, I like Omega for their simple classic looks. TAG became over-popular in the 90s (everybody had them), and I feel they lack class. Brightling are OK - I like the practicality of the Aerospace (although this year's model has an odd facia and I don't think it looks great). I do think their higher end watches and chronographs are a bit big with too many dials and functions - I'm not sure that I'd choose any of them if I were buying today.

That's a watch? I can't even read the time. Terrible face.

Such watch is worn as a piece of jewelery for special ocasions, not for every day use. I did not like that one, but I love if you can see the "innards".

Now regarding OP's question, buying an expensive brand swiss watch can be a good investmet, the same as buying art. I do not know about watches for 5000$ regarding investing.

And for the brand, I really like Vacheron Constantin. The prices start about 4000€ or so (if I am not mistaken) and go up well over 100000€.

I'm one of those who believes every guy should have at least 1 high-end watch. That said i could never bring myself to buying a Rolex (just too cliche) so i'd choose Breitling. Omegas are also very nice and probably cheaper too. Ditto for a decent Tag. Also try and buy a mechanical and not a quartz.

seriously? Buy Apple stocks.

This actually might not be a bad idea.

If I have a pressing need to know the time, I just ask someone.

Do you not have a cell phone, like everyone else? ;)

Breguet, if you want to put down some serious cash for something seriously nice ;)

Yikes. That's not so much a watch as a work of art.

To insure that properly would probably require a 5% of value premium, per year.

I would be afraid of someone boosting it, and it would own me, not the other way around.

Anybody who spends more than $100 on a watch is putting the money in the wrong place. Save it up for later.

you should save money what are you going to do with a watch you are going to get bored with it really quickly. !!!
