This does not affect 2021.
Now it might…

@DEMinSoCAL posted this from Microsoft’s bulletin in the current thread about this topic:

“Starting July 13, 2026, some users may notice that Office apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote) can open and print files, but cannot edit, save, or create new files – called “reduced functionality mode”. This happens when support for Microsoft Office apps is no longer continued for older operating systems or devices.

This issue affects both Microsoft 365 subscribers on macOS, iPhone, and iPad, and those with non-subscription software, including Office 2021 or Office 2019 on macOS. For most users, updating your OS, and updating your apps will resolve it.”

What??? It’s a lifetime, one time purchase license. So you buy it, and Microsoft decides to brick it, because they no longer support whatever version OS it originally worked on, or the last version it worked on? It should continue to work on a machine running those operating systems, FOREVER. I also feel like this is lawsuit territory. How do they brick it? How do they have remote access into your machine to brick it? That’s bullcrap.

Check out this video:

Did we ever stop believing that Microsoft was a scumbag company? And it’s a shame because Word and Excel and Powerpoint are actually the best products they’ve ever made (though I have heard that Keynote is better than Powerpoint from some people? But Apple’s Pages is crap and Numbers of course is very basic as compared to Excel).

I have installed OnlyOffice Community Edition and it works quite good for my needs. In a folder on the desktop I also have LibreOffice portable - just in case, if something goes wrong.

Welp, no M5 Mac Mini announcement means I’m keeping the M4 16/512 I ordered. Have it in my possession, but haven’t set it up yet. Can always trade in/up to a future M5 or M6, whenever that happens.

I just bought a new base 16GB/256GB M4 new from Microcenter @$599. Didn't really need it... might replace my base M1 iMac which is a secondary machine/media server.

I just figured that we might not even get a M5 Mac mini. And if we do, it certainly won't start below $799.

I still use my M1 as my desktop device and it's doing well, even with current version of Final Cut Pro.

The explanation would be that I used forethought back in Dec 2020 and got 16gb/1tb configuration.

I’m glad I bought my 16/512 Mac Mini when I did at $699 on the education store. Same configuration today on the education store is $899 😧. Same goes for my 256GB M4 iPad Air.

Rumor has it the Mini (512) won't go up in price. Already killed off the cheaper 256, so that's moot point, unless you can find it at Amazon, Best Buy, etc. That said, given the spikes Apple is implementing, if you're thinking of a 512 and its still at yesterday's price, it might be worth grabbing before Apple changes their mind?

The 256 is back and all models have gone up in price.
