Thanks to everyone who commented/helped this newbie out, I have officially ordered the 13" MBP from Amazon.com and am currently shopping for AppleCare on eBay (yes, I read the threads on here about that lol, I'm trying to find a good deal where I can actually get the box and not just the registration code). Can't wait to get the mac!!! :D

Enjoy! Waiting for delivery is the hardest part.:)

Everything the OP needs in a computer can be purchased for half the cost he is going to spend on a macbook pro by getting a PC.

You have to ask yourself.. are you getting a mac cause you don't want to deal with a PC anymore? or are you wanting a mac because you think you will look cool using it?

I don't want to deal with a PC anymore. My brother has a Macbook Pro that I've used a few times, and I really like it. Lol why would I spend 1K+ just to get something that would make me "look cool" ....I don't have money to throw away like that, lol.

Why don't you want to deal with a PC anymore? if the reasons are what you mentioned on your first post then thats silly because a mac can / will eventually have those issues too when it is old. Btw, regarding your mouse cursor issues.. a new mouse would probably fix that.

I'm not saying what you should or shouldn't buy because its your money :) .. I just think your reasons of not wanting a PC is silly.

Honestly, I really don't WANT to spend money on another PC and feel bad. I spent $550 on this POS dell and I feel really bad about it because its such a ******* machine. I also had an IBM thinkpad before this, which became really crappy after two years. I don't want to waste money on another useless machine and then feel bad about it. If I'm going to spend money, its going to be on something that'll last. The mac seems to have everything I want-its relatively lightweight (very important), powerful, reliable, with great battery life and with an OS that I really like. Apple also has great customer service.

Regarding my mouse problem, I'll need a new touchpad, which I will have to pay for because I'm out of my 1 year Dell warranty. The last time I called in, the rep tried to sell me a warranty extension without even fixing my mouse problem. All he did was update the mouse software, after which the touchpad became sluggish and I lost my double tap to click function (not to mention the original problem has not been fixed). Actually I still have it, only I have to bang the touchpad to click anything (I have all the optimized settings, so that won't work either).

Its alright if you think my reasons are silly, you didn't experience the problems I've had with PCs; I experienced them, and wish to try something new.

I can certainly understand your fustration, but there is a saying.. you get what you pay for which applies your your $550 laptop. I've had your issues before many years ago when I went cheap and bought a lousy PC. I purchased a Sony vaio 17" laptop 5 years ago for $1,800 and it still works very well. I just recently purchased a macbook pro 15" for different uses than I use my Sony for though. Mainly photography projects. I still use my Sony daily for gaming, web browsing, and e-mailing.

What I am trying to get at is macbooks are not the be all computers. Again you can get a great laptop for much, much less than what you will end up paying for a macbook pro, but of course you will get a Piece of crap if your spending only $500 for a lap top. That is all. Good luck.

Any suggestions, then? I'm willing to consider other options. Which laptop can I get for "much, much less" than a MBP that will last for the next 5 years? That is also lightweight/portable, and has great battery life.

Yes, absolutely. Your computer won't be the fastest or have all the newest features 5 years out, but it will likely still be running well and will easily still handle all the basic tasks for another few years. My late 2002 TiBook is still humming along nicely, albeit slower than it used to on today's software. The final straw was only when I couldn't get the newest operating system on my machine. That's when I knew I had to get a new one. But I still use it for web surfing, emailing, word documents, etc. The poor machine is scratched and dirty, the battery barely holds a charge anymore, and the paint on the palm rest area is worn away, but it's otherwise in good shape and quite usable.

Prior to that, I had a mid 90s Performa that I used for 7 years before I bought the TiBook.

I have a HP laptop about 4yrs ago! I handed it down to my nephew... It still work great...

I would suggested to look at HP Pavilion dv6z Select Edition series
- no BD
- Win7 64bit Home
- 6GB RAM
after that
- replace the HDD with SSD 120GB....
- turn SATA drive to a USB 2.5" with this enclosure - turn on whenever you need it, this will prolong the batt time

Now your system is a super FAST system...It will last you at least 5yrs

but if you want no part of tinkling, then MBP. no doubt

Sounds like a great PC, just configured it on the HP website. However, for a bit more, I can get more battery life and a relatively lightweight laptop (those two are the deal breakers for me), so I think I'll stick with the MBP.
