yes you are.... CD-R, CD-RW. The difference is you can write to a cdr once but can write, erase and ReWrite to a cd RW... same goes for DVD-r and DVD-RW. Then there are DVD+R and DVD +RW. They are just different types of writing to disks and some dvd players/drives read one or the other or both..depending.

Of all the things people say on this form, there is one thing that you should be aware before you get a power book. The SuperDrive is DVD-R ONLY. It will not EVEN read any other form of DVD. So look into that before you proceed.

Not true. I have several dvd+r and my powerbook reads them with ease...
I can't write dvd+r.

please go right ahead and buy a powerbook g4 ....that way they'll release the g5 right after you bought it!! ..ergo you'll be helping to speed up the release of such a machine 😉 😀 .....

but seriously ..I use both p.c and mac ..and I tells ya the mac along with being very sexy looking and feeling very slinky under the fingers has a fantastic OS, but no matter what you go for my advice to anyone buying a new comp is jam it full of RAM, as much as you can afford and/or as much as it can take.

enjoy ..

I currently have a Toshiba Satellite 1800, 240mb ram, 1.10 Ghz, Pentinum 3 processor, 30GB. I've had it for almost three years, but lately a lot of problems have arised. The LCD screen keeps going blank, the CD-rw is broken, the computer shuts down everytime I pause a dvd or avi. I am thinking about buying another laptop, and if I do, I want to know if I should get a notebook or a powerbook (or maybe even an ibook). Here are a couple things you should know about me, I am a college student, I can afford a 12' G4 powerbook or a Toshiba Satellite P10 (or something else?). I mainly use my computer for downloading a lot of music/videos/software, so I usually attract a lot of spyware/viruses. I want a dvd-rw/rom to burn all my music/videos, also a cd-rw/rom. I also use it to browse the internet and write some programming. I need a faster, reliable laptop that doesn't always have a breakdown, and excellent with multimedia, esp with avi files. I would appreciate your input! 🙂

Powerbooks and iBooks are both very outstanding machines. My Powerbook has worked for 3 years without fail. The Toshiba's I've seen are bulky, heavy and the only person I know to have one traded it in for a 12" Powerbook.
Also, OSX is easily the best Operating System I've worked on, which includes all the variations of Windows and a few distros of Linux. It's a lovely sublime system that stays out of your way, but executes so many things. For example, changing networks: one day I went from my home network (wireless) to my work (ethernet) and to a coffee shop (wireless again). OSX switches between each one with any input, just launch Safari and boom there's the world. Seemless.
I can run Word, Excel, etc. I can use the Exchange server with Entourage, I can watch DVDs, burn CDs, connect to my iPod, I can surf the web, download bittorrents, and listen to music I've gotten from iTMS. The games are weak, but the multimedia apps are unparalleled.
The 12" Powerbook is a beautiful machines, but you might want to hold off for a week or two, the Macrumors Buyers Guide indicates that the PBs and iBooks will be updated, which for you either means a faster new machine, or the same machine you were considering for a little less. Good things all around.
Good luck.

i don't know why you all say this, but my friends' PowerBook reads and burns DVD+R and DVD-R. That is also the case with our PowerMac G5's at my office. The Superdrive burns both. I thought that Apple just didn't formally support DVD+R, but it is possible to burn to. Don't ask me, maybe all these are all flukes, but i really thought it would work.
