So I got one version ahead. Just a result of my beta testing. I wasn't speaking about it not supporting HTTPS, nearly every browser since 1999 does that. I'm talking about security exploits within the browser itself, which are made worse by using PowerPC's really outdated plugins.

you go ahead and browse more "secure" while I browse faster and more compatible with websites :)

there are tastes for everything.
take care

I wouldn't be sure about you being faster. A properly tuned TenFourFox with the right DNS tweaks with polipo can be all the difference. It rivals my Mac Pro on occasion. More compatible? With Flash? Flash hasn't been needed by me in a long time. Don't even have it on my Intell based Macs. No loss of compatibility there for me.

that pimped up tenfourfox will not make sites like icloud usable on this powerbook. also the computer ran hotter with T4F... so I deleted the browser and probably will never reinstall... like I did with seamonkey and stainless and others

finally yes, for MOST of us flash support DOES matter.

btw, regarding security... I highly doubt any serious hacker will attack using tools that every modern intel mac browser can handle...

iCloud works very well on TenFourFox once tweaked appropriately. Sadly most tweaking is outside the abilities of most consumers. Lastly, Flash is dead. Even Adobe knows that.

Why isn't it tweaked to work as it should? Is there a reason to make it deliberately a slow resource hog? is there some experimental JIT settings in about:config ?

And sadly no, flash isn't dead. I wish but it isn't.

It's mostly network tweaks that can't be applied to TenFourFox, but to the machine itself and the network. There are a few extra settings within the FireFox codebase that do allow some extra enhancements. Flash is dead to me and most others that peruse this subforum. Haven't encountered the need to use it in a year or two.

Mabey. A G4 under 2.0GHz is usable only for fun. But if that's all you want it for, I say go for it!

Rabidz7,

Tell me you're joking. You should know how usable PPC Macs are and that there was never a G4 iMac that went above 1.25GHz. That however doesn't mean that it's not a good machine and still usable when you know how to use it properly

My iBook has 1.42GHz CPU, 1.5GB RAM, 32MB VRAM, lower resolution, fewer I/O ports, and it's my primary machine for school/work. I have it connected via ethernet and get a consistent 15+ DL/ 12+UL speed over the interwebs and use my iBook for Home sharing while it's connected to an external HDD.

If I could get my hands on a 1.25GHz iMac G4 20" with 2GB RAM, bluetooth module, and airport card...then I would be a very happy camper. PLUS, it would be an awesome retro gaming rig as well. All of this equals YES.

If you have a minute or two, I wouldn't mind hearing about your TFF tuning tips. Or maybe a link to where you have already discussed it?

You need a UNIX based or UNIX-like server that is not the Mac with TenFourFox on it, for maximum performance. On that server, rig up polipo to act as a transparent caching proxy that the PowerPC Mac connects to. On that machine you also need dnsmasq providing DNS caching and domain blocking to block out heavy things like ads and tracking domains. The DNS for those should point to the server where it is running pixelserv on port 80 to prevent TenFourFox from waiting for a non-existent things to load. On TenFourFox, install NoScript and RequestPolicy and remove AdBlock (if installed). You also need to configure the correct amount of connections for your internet speed and turn off some of TenFourFox's things that aren't needed with this setup like caching and syncing. Increase the networkwide MTU to increase throughput, only do this if your router/switch can do it as well. Lastly, get an OpenGL 2 compatible GPU and recompile TenFourFox to enable WebGL and OpenGL 2, this requires Leopard. That's what I remember right now, there may be other things as well.

Thanks, Intell. Researching now and I think I already have everything needed. This is going to be a fun project!

FWIW, though, and for other readers of this thread, I really don't have any complaints about the current performance of TFF. It's probably the case that Leopard Webkit is marginally faster on mine, but not nearly enough to make me abandon my preference for TFF (Not meant a criticism of Safari, just a personal preference for Firefox).

Lots of variables here, though. YMMV. I have a dual CPU machine and TFF seems to make good use of that. It's also probably true that the the websites that I frequent have kept it pretty simple over the years compared to most. I get my weather from Weather Underground, where radar comes in the form of an animated gif. My daily news site hasn't changed much in the 10 years that I've been reading it.

OP, sorry for the topic drift. Yes, I think an iMac G4 would be fun. I agree with the earlier post about finding one with USB 2.0. I'm not normally a fan of all-in-ones, but there is something special about the iMac G4 and people still get good use out of lesser machines. Honestly, I think it's the most beautiful computer ever made.

UPDATE: I'm really interested now, I want to by a maxed out iMac G4 for a music server/geek side computer and put an ssd in it. Tips?

Better to get the base units and upgrade yourself I would think. I would also recommend a unit used in education. That's what mine is, and all it ever got was Photoshop use, so it's in real good shape because the CPU/GPU wasn't pounded with so music iTunes, QuickTime, gaming usage.

Where would I find some?

The best place to look would be to find authorized Apple resellers. Normally, they buy up the education computers and then start marking them up from there. The PPC Macs though are becoming harder to find even in education institutions so CraigsList is not too bad anymore. Plus, most people now that are selling them believe what they are being told about the PPC architecture being worthless and are selling them for really cheap prices. An iMac G4 in my area(1.25GHz, 1GB RAM, 17" was being sold for $50 with no HDD or OS). I just wish I had the $50 because I would have bought it immediately.

Just keep an eye on craigslist. Good buys will show up. I was able to snag a 1Ghz 17in for $30 in the original box w/disks, but without a HD.

Just picked up a 17" 1.25GHz for my kids. I added 1GB of RAM and an airport card to it and spent about $175 total with all that. I currently have OSX Tiger on it and it runs great for what my kids need. I did put Leopard on a firewire drive though and it seems to run great as well.

Love the design. I loved the various G4 iMacs I had back in the day and was disappointed when the design changed for the G5. Glad I have another one sitting out in the open of our house for my kids to use and for me to occasionally jump on :)
