And since Apple stopped signing ios7 long ago, that really stinks.

Since the ip5 would be a secondary device for me, this is a non-issue. Don't know what iOS version I'm getting.
I think the latest iOS version has been optimised better to run on older devices. You should be ok upgrading to the latest version. Or don't you actually want to upgrade to keep the old version as a nostalgic thing?!

Really doesn't matter much to me...I would use the ip5 for the odd phone call...some web browsing, and perhaps some music.

I'm still rocking an iPhone 5, albeit on iOS 9. Great phone even to this day. It certainly used to be snappier back when it ran iOS 6. In your case, many of your favorite apps might not work with iOS 6. Should you get it? Depends on what you want out of the phone.
