If you're buying on Verizon, I would think you would want to buy now and get adopted into the unlimited data plan.

Plus, the next MAJOR upgrade, as others have said, probably won't be until 2012.

EDIT: Oops, just read you are buying on AT&T.

If not for hardware then why would you wait until after June JRoDDz? Do you mean because of the subscription controversy Apple is in currently and it will be worked out by June?

Because one of several things may happen with the subscription controversy, one being that prices for these kinds of things will be extremely expensive, or they won't be available at all. If you don't use those kinds of apps, then you should still wait, since Apple typically refreshes their iPhone line in summer. No sense on your buying an iPhone 4 now, when in 3 or 4 months there will be a new one out.

I have given it a lot of thought and I'm just going to go ahead and get an iPhone 4. I'll be using it until the 2 year contract is up, but that's ok because it does exactly what I want.

Good for you! At the end it all comes down to personal taste, so enjoy!
I've been enjoying an iPhone 3G since the day it came out, for over 2 years, and i'll finally upgrade this June.

But wait! You should always wait for the very best technology. In fact, I suggest you wait for iPhone 7. It's supposed to have 1080p resolution, 4 terabytes of storage and comes with all the books in the library of congress, and all Oscar winning movies in history pre loaded.

I walked around with several gimp phones for several years and finally got an iPhone 4 on At&t this past september. I have had numerous dropped calls and I sometimes wonder if I should have waited for the Verizon iPhone. For me, a few dropped calls is a small price to pay compared to another 5 months putting up with a gimped phone (BB 8830).

I say if you want the 2012 model, then wait! Unless you get a new iPhone each year, then I say getting the iPhone 4 now makes the most sense.

You really need to ask yourself, which model will offer the most significant upgrade: the 4 to 5 OR the 5 to 6? If you wait and get the 5, then you'll probably be stuck with it until 2013 (iPhone 7).

In my opinion, the 6 will be a much bigger upgrade than going from 4 to 5. So, I would get in now (bypass the iPhone 5) and by the time the 6 rolls around, you should be close to getting upgrade pricing.

The upside is you'll be getting used to the iPhone now and not later. Plus, you never know when a release will happen. Production delays, etc. (think white iPhone 4) could move the release further to the right.

I, like you, decided to go ahead and get it. I know of the upcoming upgrade. If I just have to have it, I can always sell my current phone. At least by getting it now, I have the unlimited data plan incase Verizon ever decides to do away with it as AT&T has.

I appreciate all the replies I've gotten. I'm going to go get my phone in the morning.

I have never owned an iPhone before and am wondering if I should buy an AT&T iPhone now or wait for the iPhone 5? I really want a retina display and was thinking of buying the new iPod touch (I currently have 32GB 3rd Gen) but I've been planning on waiting for the iPhone 5 and it really wouldn't make sense to have both.. What should I do? If the iPhone 5 won't be a major update I wouldn't care to purchase an iPhone 4 right now.

id say you might as well wait until the new iphone comes out this summer. you dont seem too anxious to get an iphone so theres no harm in waiting till you see what kind of update will take place. if you dont care for the new iphone then go for the iphone 4. its such an amazing phone you wont be sorry either way

I went ahead and got the iPhone 4 when it came out on Verizon for a few reasons...
1. I hated the phone I was currently using. 4 or 5 months made a big difference to me.
2. The "iPhone 5" may or may not be much different than the iPhone 4, no one really knows. But I've yet to hear a suggestion that's going to make it an earth shattering upgrade. Who cares about a faster or dual core processor? Longer battery life or a 64GB option are about all that would impress me
3. I refuse to bow to the cult of 'new models make previous models obsolete.' My iPhone 4 will work just as well the week after the next iPhone comes out as it did the week before. In tech today, newer is usually not dramatically better.
4. Even if a new iPhone does come out this summer its not guaranteed that VZW will see that phone, it could be longer or next year. (I know not a question for you since you're on AT&T, but it factored into my reasoning.)

For me, it came down to I wanted a great phone now rather than a slightly to moderately improved version 4 or 5 months from now. You'll never be happy with technology purchases if you're always dreading the day a new model is released.

Just buy one now. It's only a phone.

Apple is famous all over the world, for the wild claims they make each time they have something new to sell. When in reality the words are far better than the product. Not that the products aren't good, but again it's only a phone.

Remember newer is not always better. Bugs and problems have plagued every iPhone to date. I know, I've owned them all.

While it could be said that eventually given enough time, Apple issues a fix. Why go through the hassle?

The current GSM model is debugged now.

The new CDMA model for Verizon even has a new antenna, although Apple swears there was nothing wrong with the original iPhone 4. He said it was the stupid idiots that didn't know how to hold a phone.

The message - don't be an idiot as defined by their CEO.
