I hear that only Apple refurbished products are reliable and shouldn't opt for sources other than Apple. Is that true? Cause I'd like to know if there are other cheaper alternatives for refurbished that are still reliable as Apple is.

I would think the main issue would be with the warranty. Apple warrants their machines and has the company to back it up. Other vendors who may refurb a machine don't have a warranty like Apple's. Once upon a time I worked in computer sales and specialised in Apple machines. We would often refurbish Apple machines and would give an in house warranty of 90 days (more if you bought our extended warranty). Apple refurbished has a full year warranty and the ability to add in Apple Care. I've bought vendor refurbished machines and they have worked just fine for me, but my preferences lean more toward an official Apple refurb.

I only recommend to purchase refurbished from Apple, if, you will be purchasing refurbished.

I've heard that Bestbuy's open box sales (not sure of those are true "refurbs") are excellent deals and typically they seem to be high quality - at least from what I've read here.

Apple does indeed go through the computer with a fine tooth comb and makes sure its in tip top shape.

I would also check B+H and Adorama. Sometimes clearance discounts on last year's model can be significant, and they have things like Black Friday sales. With Best Buy others on here claimed to have stacked open box discounts with mover's coupons.

I've heard good things about Best Buy's open box deals too.

I've heard several anecdotal reports of buyers finding open box Macs that "still have the plastic" on them, and saving in the process.

If you find an "open box" deal where the Mac still has the plastic and other factor packaging on it, by all means, I recommend to pull the trigger.
