You mean ‘haptic‘ feedback buttons, not static buttons. What that would do, is allow basically for those buttons to eliminate Any ingress points for water to penetrate, as it would be a direct connection to the haptic engine for tactile feedback. Similarly to what the iPhone 7 home button executed, that created a tactile feedback to the user, but created a greater water resistance seal in addition.

I say get it now. I was skeptical of the Always On Display but compared to my old watch I wouldn't want to go back without it. It's VERY convenient being able to just glance at your watch and use it like my old traditional watches. Just got mine last week so I'm putting my money where my mouth is so to speak.

I got pretty lucky and picked up a 44mm Space Grey with GPS and Cellular, with box and everything mint condition for $300. Retail is $529. Originally bought in early March. Previous owner didn’t even have it a month. I feel like I stole it.

Always on is a game changer for me. Get the 5...skip the 3 and the 4. If you don’t mind preowned it may be a cheap way to go.

Which watch face is that?

If it helps, MacRumors buyers guide says neutral. I'd say with all that is happening right now, it would be a good idea to buy the S5.

I was at a similar point some weeks ago and I decided to buy a Series 3. Simple reason is I did not know how I would use the watch, if it would have some value for me or not.

When I got the watch, I realized I had no clue about how to use it or what to use it for. Also, I didn't look at any alternatives (Garmin or Suuntu watches).
Now I do know about that stuff, have the watch integrated into my daily routine and it's definitely not my last watch, I'll probably upgrade to S6 or S7. But I'm still happy for how I decides as it was a comparably small investment.
You should alway wait. The longer you wait the watches will get better and be cheaper.

In terms of the Series 5, it really doesn’t ‘get cheaper’. Its hardly discounted all the until August 2020, a month before the actual keynote. That’s not really that much of a savings, however; there may not be an Apple Watch launch this year given the circumstances Due to the pandemic, which actually means the series 5 would probably remain at the value it is currently for a longer duration.

Does the Series 5 feel bigger than Series 3? I know it is 2mm bigger but I’m wondering how much difference that 2mm makes. I’m worried anything bigger than my current 42mm Series 1 is going to look bulky on my wrist.

I just picked up a s5, as my first ever wearable device.
if youre sitting on the fence. And don’t have any other means of activity tracking. And that’s something you want to do. I would absolutely pick one up now it would far outweigh the time yoUve spent without it.

as a bonus it does cool watch things on the side.

Bigger? Well that depends which model you’re actually holding, because if you’re holding the [stainless versus the aluminum] model in your hand, naturally the stainless might feel bigger by perception, because of the weight of the stainless. But in terms of the overall size, on your wrist, at first, it does actually feel bigger, but you quickly adjust, assuming you have the Band appropriately fitted.

Thanks! I finally got a Series 5 44mm. I barely noticed any difference.

i currently own a S4 44mm been thinking about the S5 44mm is the AOD really that good to make it worth it?

I'd say just ask yourself - do you ever wish you could look at your AW and see the time without having to activate it or raise your wrist? I just ordered a S5, but AOD will be the first thing I turn off as I just don't need or want it (I only bought it for the case material not available on the S4)

it would be just for the AOD since i wouldnt be able to afford anything but aluminium

With ‘raise to wake’ being so sensitive and tweaked perfectly for the most part over the years, I actually prefer that option over AOD. Mainly because, I don’t need to see my Apple Watch display illuminated when I’m not looking at it, versus having it on all the time. At least Apple gives you the option of disabling AOD.

My big concern about buying an AW5 now is that the rumoured sleep tracking feautre might be limited to AW6. Apple’s way to entice people to upgrade their AW.

Of course that would be a tactical move for Apple to do something like that, think about it for a minute, they have to find a specific reason to push the consumer to want to consider this Series 6. Sleep tracking is a massive step forward and another sorta health feature metric that Apple can use to promote sales for the Series 6. There’s no other company in the world that rations features/technology the way Apple does for promoting new products.

I ended up finding an awesome deal on a series 5 on eBay. That’s the main factor that pushed me to go for it. Since I got such an awesome deal on the 5, I won’t feel awful if I end up with a 6. I’ll just sell my 4 or 5. I won’t have to take much of a hit in depreciation on the 5.

That said, the battery life difference is very much noticeable between the 3, 4 and 5. Each series has had worse battery life. I barely get through the day with the 5 before I’m under 20%. I’ve only had it for three days though. So maybe it’ll settle down?? I sure hope so.

You have to remember - sleep tracking is already available on the 4 &5 via many very, very capable apps.

So for Apple to say - You can only get 'real' sleep tracking on the S6 and you need to buy this new device - it would have to somehow, be via some included piece of brand new sensing hardware that no other activity tracking device has used yet - and somehow does a better job than what's already out there?

I just don't see how Apple could promote that at all.

If anything - they will just say they have a longer-lasting battery than the S5 - ANd there are way, way cheaper devices like Fitbits etc which have batteries last a week already which do a fantastic job on sleep tracking.

So again - I just don't see Apple being able to push a new hardware upgrade to get something that's already available on its devices and others. Sure, people will buy an S6 for that when they market it as being able to do that and not mention all the other sleep apps that have been available for years...

Based off your post here, I question how closely you follow Apple. The reason I say that, is we already know there are ‘sleep tracking apps‘ available long before Apple releases their rendition, but you’re questioning how Apple could promote something that they will create natively? (That probably has years of work in involved) They’ve been doing this for years for tons of features throughout the iPhone, iPad and they sell those points to consumers to upgrade based on Technology from other competitors. And you’re under the notion that Apple ‘can’t promote‘ something that they may put a unique emphasis with sleep tracking?

There was an article I believe two years ago, where Apple was working with ‘sleep specialist‘ on studies, patterns and overall Tendencies for sleeping behavior, and I can guarantee you, they will probably have a much deeper aspect on Sleep tracking, And I guarantee they will find a unique way of promoting this with how well they market their devices

The original concern I was answering is Apple limiting their sleep tracking to only the S6 watch. Why would their sleep tracking only be available on S6, when many other companies offer it by apps on older AW models? That's the question I was playing with.

Apple's awesome at promoting stuff. No question.

Anyways, I don't see how they could promote sleep tracking as an app - just an app - that requires a $400 new AW - again unless it requires some new hardware they are creating. In that case, hats off to them for pushing that area of technology forward and that would drive sales for sure.

But you are right, I don't follow articles closely on specialists etc that Apple involves in their technologies or research for future products. I come at it from more of a normal Apple consumer angle that enjoys using much of their hardware and apps and tries to figure out (for fun - in this case via this forum) if something is feasible. I'm not always right, but the discussions are enjoyable.

BTW I'm in the camp that 99% of the time prefers the Apple native apps compared to anything I have to install separately since yes, Apple does fantastic work on those baked in apps.

Personally I ordered an S5 last week, as I am betting if sleep tracking is announced by Apple - it will be a product of WatchOS and available to older models and it will not require a new watch. Regardless, looking forward to finding out!

This is the reason for my apprehension. The lack of a native sleep tracking app for so long suggests Apple has something special up their sleeves. Some new sensor that works better than an app and monitors a range of other health issues.

Add the fact that the changes from AW4 to AW5 was pretty minimal leads me to think AW6 will be a massive upgrade.

Problem is that a new AW6 might still be 4-5 months away. But i can get a good deal on an AW5 right now.

I don’t know...it’s anyone’s guess. The Apple trend lately has been very iterative updates. I’m not sure what technology is out there right now that they can use to have a “massive” update. It would be awesome. I’d buy almost immediately, if they can make big battery gains and add mental health and sleep tracking capabilities. It sort of snapped me out of it when someone put battery gains in percentages...if they were to get multiple days of battery life is would be well over a 100% increase... just not sure it’s feasible.

I hope I’m wrong!

Bolded in your post:

unless I’m not understanding your post or you’re taking something out of context, what ‘mental health’ capabilities could Apple consider for the Apple Watch? I can understand physical monitoring in terms of heart rate, EKG, etc. But mental health? Mental will be referring to concerns that no Apple Watch could detect given how intricate Psychological tendencies can be. Again, Unless I missed a recent rumor/prediction, I’m not understanding ‘mental health‘ would be a consideration.
