I know this is now a thread of me talking to myself, but I've been setting the Macbook up and forgot just how cool a little machine it is. Am wondering if I can keep this one and pass my MBP on....

No, Im reading it!

Have developed an illness which is causing me some problems with arm mobility, and I'm thinking of picking up a 12 model, as I'm finding it awkward to carry my MBP13.

Gutted to have missed out on the 799 price at John Lewis - don't really want to drop 999 on the next spec up!

Sorry to hear you're having mobility issues. The laptop size thing is strange because you just get used to what you have. When I use 15" MBPs and go back to the 13, it seems tiny and so light. And on paper, there's only a few hundred grams between the 12" and 13" MBP, but it seems a lot more than that, maybe a combination of the design, footprint and weight?

There's still some in stock, but none in Scotland. That's exactly how we were feeling - really didn't want to spend the extra £200 on the one up. Not sure if you know anybody down south who could pick one up for you? Or take a wee day trip (which is a bit more extravagant, but a cheap train ticket and it might be worth it....)

Thanks! Its (hopefully) not permanent, but will be having physio over the next few months to get things going again.

I'm finding the MBP 13 bulky and awkward to hold, whereas my iPad is fine. Will check out stock on JL website, I have family down on England, who could probably pick one up for me.

Bought the £999 2017 i5 Macbook from John Lewis, and the battery was faulty! I think that's a sign that I spent too much...waiting for the refund back to my card.

Loved the size though, so will keep shopping around for a better deal on the M3 version.

I was really torn between models when I originally made this thread.

I'm sure the Air is a fine machine but like ascender has been saying, I just love this MacBook. It looks stunning, genuinely one of the most beautiful products they've ever made I think. I don't think it deserves it's bad reputation.

In terms of performance I haven't noticed any issues either. I've switched to Safari from Chrome and to be honest haven't felt any need to switch back. Used the keyboard for a lot of writing and so far have no gripes with that either.

For anyone still on the hunt I'd try and track one down at a John Lewis store if you really want one.

In the end I kept the MacBook and have given him my MBP. I know its only got one port and I know its under-powered, but I just love the form factor. Its got a great screen, the speakers are decent, its fast enough for everything I need to do when I'm not at my own office and its so light.

I think the new Air is really nice, but those 400 or so grammes do make a difference if you're trying to pack light.

Still seems to be stock of the base model in 15 or so John Lewis stores in England...

Looking to buy a new laptop, my first since my 2009 MacBook Pro died.

I'm in the UK and the MacBook 12" is priced at £800, with a free 2 year guarantee. For £150 more I can get the MacBook Air.

I'm certain that the MacBook 12 will be able to handle my basic needs. I'll be predominantly using Chrome, Pages and iTunes. I'm sort of concerned about buying a discontinued product though. I know that may sound stupid, but I don't want to be left behind in the near future it terms of updates etc.

Do I have anything to worry about, or should I go for this deal?

I just found the standard 2017 1.2 8GB 256GB on eBay for $900 with AppleCare+ until March 2022!!!

Looks like it’s been sitting somewhere and has lost 20% of its battery capacity.

I bought the 2017 i5, 8GB, 512GB SSD for $700 shipped on eBay. Just do some looking around and be patient. Give it a week or two and you'll find them. I was hesitant because I can't stand waiting on something to load but this is literally just as fast as my 2017 15" $3200 model that was spec'd out for what I do. I just don't do anything crazy apparently. The 2017 has hardware decoding and I can play multiple 4k video's at once with no issue. So go nuts. It's a FANTASTIC machine and I'm so glad I decided to go with it. (I ruined my 2017 15" btw it's why I'm here)

I like laptops with no annoying fan noises so the macbook 12 was the only product to buy from apple with passive cooling and its amazing. I bought it in Ukraine for $1050 macbook 12 2017 the lowest config.
Like when taking bath holding it with one hand and typing, may do it for 2 hours without problem.
BTW my wife has macbook air 2018 and it bit heavy to do same thing. Also air producing fan noise when she playing browser games. 12 inch model screen has better look too. Is one type-c port a problem? Not at all. Even when i need mouse the bluetooth(logitech M590 silent) works just fine (only using mouse when playing oldschool strategy games Stronghold, Disciples via playonmac).
Besides apple laptops I also own passively cooled Acer Swift 1 running on Linux which is also fine but lacks great apple's touchpad and good sound quality.
